No app store, permission check, or security scan can prove an app is safe. On a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, reduce the risk by installing from Google Play or Galaxy Store, checking whether requested permissions fit the app’s purpose, and keeping built-in protections enabled. If an app behaves suspiciously, use Samsung’s diagnostic and removal tools.
Before you install an app
Choose an established source
Samsung recommends downloading apps from Google Play or Galaxy Store. An APK downloaded through a browser or another source is outside that default recommendation and carries additional risk. Auto Blocker may prevent installation attempts from unauthorized sources; do not treat disabling a protection to get around a block as a routine fix. Check whether permissions fit the app
Consider what the app does and whether the access it requests makes sense for that function. A mismatch is a reason to pause, but permissions alone cannot establish that an app is trustworthy. Keep software and scanning current
Install available device software updates and leave Google Play Protect scanning enabled. Samsung describes Play Protect as a Google Play feature that scans apps for suspicious behavior, including permission requests that might be misused for financial fraud; Samsung says it is enabled by default on Galaxy devices. Review or revoke an app’s permissions
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap the app you want to review, then tap Permissions.
- Select a permission shown under Allowed, then choose Don’t allow or turn off the permission switch, depending on the screen.
Revoking access can limit what an app can do, but it may also prevent a feature from working. If an app has not been used for a while, Android may reset its permissions; the app can ask for them again when you next open it. Menu names and screens vary by model and software version. What Samsung’s built-in protections do
Auto Blocker
On supported devices, look under Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker. Auto Blocker can block installations from unauthorized sources and certain USB commands, suspected malware images in messaging, and non-official software updates. It reduces exposure to specified risks; it does not certify every installed app as safe. Samsung Canada’s Auto Blocker guide (updated July 15, 2026) and Samsung U.S. guidance describe the feature.

Maximum restrictions
Some Galaxy devices offer Maximum restrictions as a stronger Auto Blocker setting. It adds controls but can have practical costs: work profiles or apps requiring device-administrator privileges may not activate, 2G service is blocked, hyperlink previews are limited, and shared albums are unavailable. Check work, connectivity, and sharing needs before enabling it; stronger restrictions are not the right fit for everyone. Availability and behavior can vary by device and region. Third-party antivirus apps
Samsung’s U.S. malware guidance says antivirus apps are not pre-installed and advises users to avoid third-party anti-malware apps. For the protections covered here, use Galaxy and Google’s built-in controls rather than assuming another scanner will prove an app safe. Samsung’s malware guidance

If an app behaves suspiciously
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and restart it before running Samsung’s diagnostic; Samsung recommends both steps for accurate diagnosis.
- Open Settings > Device care > Diagnostics > App safety Diagnostics. Review any apps flagged as risks.
- Uninstall an app you determine you do not trust: open Settings > Apps, select the app, then tap Uninstall.
Diagnostics identifies apps for review; use your judgment before removing an app you need. Samsung also describes using Safe mode as part of malware troubleshooting. Exact paths, screens, and feature availability depend on model, software version, carrier, and region. If a setting is not where the path indicates, search Settings for its name. Choose a protection level that fits your needs

The choice is a compatibility trade-off, not a ranking of whether a particular app is safe. If your work setup, network access, or sharing habits rely on a restricted feature, standard protections may be more practical. Samsung Canada’s Auto Blocker guide

Why settings may differ on your Galaxy
Samsung notes that menus and screens can vary with model, software version, carrier, and region. The paths in this guide reflect Samsung support instructions, not a universal layout for every Galaxy device. If a path does not match, use Settings search for terms such as “Auto Blocker,” “Permissions,” or “App safety Diagnostics.”
