A transparent LAN service (TLS) connects separate customer locations over a provider’s Layer 2 Ethernet network so their networks can behave like one LAN. In standards terminology, IETF RFC 4761 calls Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) “also known as Transparent LAN Service.” The term describes the customer-facing service, not one required technology for the provider’s network.

What does transparent LAN service mean?

“Transparent” means that the service carries Ethernet traffic between customer sites in a way that presents LAN-like connectivity across those locations. The provider transports the Layer 2 service across its network; the customer can connect geographically separate LANs without treating each connection as a separate point-to-point network.

In VPLS, the emulated LAN learns and forwards traffic using Ethernet MAC addresses. RFC 4762 describes it as a Layer 2 broadcast domain limited to a defined user group. This is different from a routed Layer 3 service, where traffic between sites is forwarded based on IP routing rather than being presented as one Ethernet LAN.

How is transparent LAN service related to VPLS?

RFC 4761 uses Transparent LAN Service as another name for VPLS. VPLS provides LAN-like connectivity across a packet-switched provider network, using Ethernet MAC learning and forwarding. The provider’s internal implementation can vary: RFC 4761 describes BGP for auto-discovery and signaling, while RFC 4762 describes an approach using LDP signaling and pseudowires. Those are distinct VPLS approaches, not requirements that every provider use the same control plane or transport.

How do E-Line, E-LAN, and E-Tree differ?

Carrier Ethernet services can use different topologies, which determine which customer locations can exchange traffic. Mplify, formerly the MEF Forum, describes Carrier Ethernet as technology-agnostic Layer 2 connectivity. Its service overview distinguishes these patterns:

Service type Topology What it connects
E-Line Point-to-point Two endpoints
E-LAN Multipoint-to-multipoint Multiple endpoints that can communicate as part of a multipoint service
E-Tree Rooted multipoint Root and leaf endpoints, with leaf-to-leaf communication restricted

Mplify’s Carrier Ethernet overview describes E-Line as point-to-point connectivity. RFC 7387 explains that E-LAN can be implemented with Layer 2 VPN technologies such as VPLS or EVPN. In an E-Tree, roots can communicate with roots and leaves, but leaves cannot communicate with other leaves. That is a topology restriction, not a complete security guarantee: E-Tree does not itself account for higher-layer security requirements.

MEF 6.3 defines subscriber Ethernet service constructs across point-to-point, multipoint-to-multipoint, and rooted-multipoint topologies, including port-based and VLAN-based forms. It refers to service attributes in MEF 10.4 and Layer 2 control protocols in MEF 45.1, and supersedes MEF 6.2 according to its publisher.

What to check when evaluating a provider’s service

The phrase “transparent LAN service” does not establish a provider’s precise service boundaries, availability, or commitments. Ask for the details that determine how your sites will actually connect:

  • Topology and reachability: Confirm whether the service is point-to-point, multipoint-to-multipoint, or rooted multipoint, and identify which sites can send traffic to one another.
  • Ethernet interface behavior: Ask what behavior is observable at each Ethernet UNI (user-network interface) and between UNIs, including the service attributes the provider supports.
  • Site reach: Check whether each location is directly on the provider’s network or requires an access partner or transit provider. Carrier Ethernet services can span access and transit networks.
  • Implementation and commitments: Separate the customer-visible service from the technology used inside the provider network. Request the specific SLA, supported control protocols, geographic availability, and price; standards do not set terms for an individual provider.
