You can download Google Forms content through Google’s account export, but Google’s published export inventory names embedded images and form settings without explicitly confirming that answer-based branching rules are included. If you need a reliable backup, keep the live form until you have inspected the archive and checked its sections, images, and routes. A printout is only a static copy, while Sheets and CSV downloads contain responses rather than a documented editable-form export.
Choose the export that matches what you need
| Need | Route | What the output is | Branching and images |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive the form and related content | Google account data export | A downloadable archive of Google Forms content | Google’s inventory names embedded images and form content, but does not explicitly name branching metadata; inspect the archive to verify what it contains. |
| Keep a paper or static copy | Print from the Forms editor | A static representation of the form | It cannot retain interactive branching. Check the printed pages to confirm images appear as needed. |
| Save submitted answers | Link responses to Sheets or download CSV | Response data | These routes are not documented as complete exports of the editable form, its images, or branching. |
| Rebuild or migrate a form with code | Google Apps Script FormApp | A developer-managed form workflow | FormApp can open or create forms, but Google does not describe it as a turnkey full-fidelity export. Validate rebuilt images, sections, and destinations. |
Archive Google Forms content with an account export
Google’s account export help includes Forms content such as titles, descriptions, questions, validation and grading settings, embedded images, responses, quiz scores, manual feedback, and draft responses. The same inventory does not explicitly list branching or section-navigation metadata, so do not assume the archive preserves those rules merely because it includes other form content. Google’s export-your-data help describes the included content.
Use the account-level export route described on Google’s export page, select the relevant data, create the export, then download and inspect the resulting archive. The exact files and packaging are determined by the export; verify the form content you rely on rather than treating a successful download as proof that every feature survived.
Check the archive before relying on it
- Compare the archived question order and wording with the live form.
- Check that embedded and standalone images are present and usable.
- Compare section layout and any answer-based destinations with the live form.
- Test each branch in the live form or a controlled copy before changing or deleting the original.
This check matters because Google documents branching as a feature but does not explicitly confirm that its account export includes the rules that implement it.

Understand what branching and images mean in a form
In Google Forms, branching sends respondents to sections according to their answers. Google says, “You can set up a survey so that people only see certain sections based on their answers.” Its help explains that answer-based navigation is available for multiple-choice and dropdown questions, and that section breaks determine where respondents can go next. Google’s branching help explains the feature.
Images can appear inside questions or answers, or as standalone image items. Google’s current editor help lists limits of 300 content items and 75 sections. Those are editor limits, not a guarantee that an export will reproduce every image or navigation rule exactly. Google’s form-editing help covers adding images and sections.

Print a static copy from the Forms editor
If you need a paper copy or a noninteractive record, open the form in the editor, open More, and choose Print. Google’s Forms screen-reader help lists Print in that menu. Google’s screen-reader documentation describes the menu command.

Export responses separately to Sheets or CSV
To work with submitted answers, open the form’s Responses tab and link responses to Google Sheets, or use the option to download responses as a CSV file. Google documents both routes in its form-response help. They export response data; they are not a documented backup of the editable form, its embedded images, or its branching configuration.
Use Apps Script only when you need a coded migration
For a scripted workflow, Google Apps Script’s FormApp service can open an existing form or create one. That capability is a building block, not a promise of a complete form exporter. A form owner or editor needs access to the source form, and any rebuilt form should be checked for images, section structure, and answer-based destinations. See the FormApp reference for the documented service.

Keep the original until the backup is verified
Google documents an account export that includes important Forms content and images, but does not explicitly say that branching metadata is included. Treat the archive as a candidate backup, not proof of a fully restorable form: inspect it, compare it with the live form, and test its routes before relying on it. Use printing for a static record and Sheets or CSV when your goal is answers.
