For most Windows 11 PCs, leave the standard recommended driver updates enabled. Windows Update installs recommended drivers automatically, including network-adapter drivers. Optional driver updates are different: Windows does not install them automatically, so you can review and choose them yourself.
How automatic network driver updates work
Windows 11 regularly checks Windows Update for recommended driver updates. Microsoft says driver updates can include network adapters, and that available offers come through participating hardware partners’ certified updates. The details depend on the provider, and a particular driver may not appear in Windows Update or on Microsoft.com. Microsoft explains how driver updates work.
Automatic recommended updates are not the same as optional driver offers. Optional updates require you to select the driver before installing it.
Should you leave them enabled?
For a typical personal PC, leaving the recommended update path enabled is the sensible default: it lets Windows deliver a newer compatible driver when one is offered without requiring you to seek out updates yourself. That does not establish that every newer driver will improve every Wi-Fi or Ethernet setup, however. The right choice for a specific adapter can depend on its model, current driver, and symptoms.

If your computer is managed by an organization, follow its IT policy rather than changing update behavior on your own.
How to check optional network driver updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand the driver updates, if that section appears, and identify the network driver relevant to your adapter.
- Select only the driver you intend to install, then choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows after installation, as Microsoft advises.
If no relevant driver is listed, Windows Update has not offered one there; it does not mean that every manufacturer driver is available through this page.

What to do if a network problem follows an update
If Wi-Fi or Ethernet starts misbehaving after a driver update, Microsoft documents rolling back a recently installed driver or reinstalling a driver through Device Manager. Use the steps in Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance for the available update, reinstall, and rollback options.

If Windows Update cannot find a suitable driver, Microsoft recommends checking the computer or network-adapter manufacturer’s official support site for a driver compatible with your installed Windows version. Avoid third-party driver download sites. Microsoft also explains that Windows Driver Policy relies on kernel Code Integrity and cryptographic signing; if a driver is blocked, its guidance is to check Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official support page.
