Fan Control is the closest general-purpose SpeedFan alternative for a supported Windows desktop: it offers fan curves, profiles, and multiple temperature inputs. For supported fan headers and cooling controllers, Argus Monitor is a paid option with a 30-day evaluation. For graphics-card fans specifically, use MSI Afterburner. If you only need sensor readings, HWiNFO is a monitoring companion, not a documented whole-system fan-control replacement.

There are five tools worth considering in the available documentation, not eight equally complete replacements. The key distinction is whether you need to control motherboard or case fans, tune a GPU fan, or just monitor temperatures. No tool can be assumed to work with every PC; check support for your exact hardware before relying on it.

Which SpeedFan alternative fits your job?

Tool Best fit Control scope Cost or evaluation
Fan Control Custom curves and profiles on a supported Windows desktop Motherboard and other detected fans; hardware support varies Free
Argus Monitor Fan control using available system temperatures Supported motherboard headers, AIO solutions, and external controllers Fully functional 30-day evaluation; check the vendor site for current license terms
MSI Afterburner Customizing a graphics-card fan curve GPU-focused Not stated on the official page
HWiNFO Monitoring sensor readings or supplying data to another tool Monitoring and integrations; not established here as a complete fan controller Not stated on the cited add-ons page
Open Hardware Monitor Monitoring sensors; fan control on supported controller chips Depends on supported hardware Not stated on the repository page

Best options for controlling fans

1. Fan Control: best general-purpose replacement for supported desktops

Fan Control’s official release repository documents support for Windows 10 and Windows 11, custom curves, saved profiles, multiple temperature sources, and combined sensors. These features make it the closest match when you want to manage more than just a graphics card.

Compatibility depends on whether the utility’s underlying hardware libraries can detect and control the components in your PC. The feature list does not guarantee that every motherboard, controller, or fan will appear. The project also cautions that most laptops do not expose their fans to third-party control software, although plugin support may exist for particular devices. Check the project’s hardware and device guidance before expecting control on a laptop.

2. Argus Monitor: a paid option for supported headers and controllers

Argus Monitor’s product page describes fixed fan speeds and temperature-based curves for supported motherboard fan headers, AIO cooling solutions, and external controllers. Its curves can use available readings such as CPU, GPU, drive, motherboard, and controller temperatures. The vendor offers a fully functional 30-day evaluation; consult its site for current licensing and update-maintenance terms.

Argus Monitor’s broad sensor categories do not guarantee compatibility with a particular board or controller. Confirm that your hardware is supported and that the temperature sources you want are available before setting a curve.

Monitoring tools and narrower alternatives

4. HWiNFO: pair sensor monitoring with a separate controller

HWiNFO’s official add-ons page documents integrations, and Fan Control lists an HWiNFO sensor-import plugin. That makes HWiNFO useful when you want sensor data available alongside a separate fan-control tool. The cited documentation does not establish HWiNFO by itself as a whole-system fan-control replacement for SpeedFan.

5. Open Hardware Monitor: consider it for supported sensor and controller hardware

The Open Hardware Monitor repository describes Windows sensor monitoring and fan controls for supported controller chips. Its control depends on hardware support, and the cited repository does not establish the breadth or current state of that support for a particular PC. Verify that the project and your hardware meet your needs before choosing it as a modern fan-control replacement.

How to choose and check compatibility

  1. Identify what you want to control. For motherboard or case fans, start with Fan Control or assess Argus Monitor. For a graphics-card fan curve, consider MSI Afterburner. For readings without fan control, use a monitoring tool such as HWiNFO.
  2. Check the exact hardware. Look up your motherboard, controller, AIO, or GPU in the software’s official compatibility information. A tool’s general feature list is not proof that a particular fan header or sensor will be detected.
  3. Confirm the relevant temperature input. If a curve should respond to a GPU, drive, or other component temperature, make sure the software can read that sensor on your PC. Available inputs vary by system.
  4. Start with a reversible setup. Save a profile where supported, make a modest curve change, and observe fan behavior and temperatures under the conditions you care about. Do not assume that a sensor display means the application can reliably control the associated fan.

Fan Control version and security note

Fan Control’s project states that its V237 and earlier releases used WinRing0, which Windows Defender flagged as Trojan:Win32/Vigorf.A as of September 4, 2025. The project says V238 and later remove WinRing0 in favor of a PawnIO build. This is the project’s stated resolution; use the official release source, check current security information, and do not bypass or whitelist a detection simply to continue using an older release.

What a fan-control alternative can—and cannot—replace

“SpeedFan alternative” can mean different things: controlling case fans, tuning a GPU fan, or viewing temperature and sensor readings. These are not interchangeable capabilities. A monitoring tool may report temperatures without offering dependable control of a fan header, while a GPU utility is not a universal motherboard fan manager. The cited product information does not provide controlled noise or performance comparisons, so choose by supported hardware and required function rather than an assumed ranking.
