To remove Win32/Neshta, update Microsoft Defender, run a full scan, then use Microsoft Defender Offline if the detection returns or you suspect malware is hiding. If the infection persists or Windows has been damaged, reset or reinstall Windows as a last resort. Microsoft describes Defender as detecting and removing Neshta, but does not guarantee that every infected program can be repaired.
What Win32/Neshta does—and what removal can mean
Microsoft describes Virus:Win32/Neshta.C as a file-infecting virus that places its code before the code in Windows executable files. That behavior is specific to the .C entry; it should not be assumed to describe every Neshta detection. Microsoft’s general Neshta entry says Defender detects and removes the threat, and recommends updated security intelligence and a full scan to address possible remnants or system changes.
Detection and removal do not establish that an infected application has been repaired into a safe, usable state. Do not run an executable that Defender flagged just because the alert has disappeared. If an affected program remains broken, reinstall it from a trusted source or restore it from a clean backup.

Step 1: Update Microsoft Defender
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then open Protection updates or Security intelligence updates.
- Select Check for updates and allow the update to finish before scanning.
Microsoft says security intelligence is used during scans and can be updated automatically through Windows Update. The exact labels may differ by Windows version or display language. See Microsoft’s Windows Security and Defender Offline guidance.

Step 2: Run a full scan
- In Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options, choose Full scan, then select Scan now.
- Let the scan complete. Review the results and allow Defender to quarantine or remove detected threats.
Microsoft says a full scan checks every file and program on the device. Note the detection name and affected file paths shown in the results. Avoid deleting files or changing registry entries manually based on old malware descriptions; those details are not a current, universal removal checklist. Microsoft’s Neshta threat description recommends updated definitions and a full scan because remnants or system changes may remain.
Step 3: Run Microsoft Defender Offline if detection returns
- Save open documents and close apps; the scan restarts the PC.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), then start the scan.
- After Windows restarts, open Protection history in Windows Security to review what Defender found and did.
The offline scan runs after a restart in the Windows Recovery Environment, outside the usual Windows session. Microsoft says malware may have a harder time hiding or defending itself there. The scan does not guarantee that damaged files or applications will be repaired. The procedure and Windows 10/11 label guidance are documented by Microsoft Support.

If Neshta persists or Windows no longer works
If Defender cannot complete a scan, Neshta is detected again after the offline scan, or Windows programs stop working, use Microsoft’s malware-removal troubleshooting guidance to decide whether further recovery is needed. Microsoft lists resetting or reinstalling Windows as options when malware has made persistent changes.
Reinstallation is a last resort because it can remove data from the device. If you need Windows installation media, Microsoft’s recovery guidance explains how to create it using another working computer and a USB drive. Back up only carefully selected personal files, ideally from a backup made before the infection; do not restore suspect executable files or programs.
