Usually, no: connecting cable coax directly to an LG TV does not by itself let you watch encrypted subscription channels. The TV may tune channels the provider sends unencrypted, but encrypted channels require provider-authorized equipment that is compatible with your TV and cable service. Depending on your country and setup, that could mean a CableCARD, a CI/CAM module, or the provider’s set-top box.
Why direct coax usually cannot show encrypted channels
A coax cable carries the cable signal to the TV, and a built-in tuner can scan for channels it supports. Neither the cable nor the scan authorizes your subscription or decrypts an encrypted channel. Whether a channel appears depends on the signal format and encryption used by your provider, as well as the tuner and conditional-access support in your specific LG model.
So, connecting coax directly may be enough for channels transmitted unencrypted, but it is not a general replacement for a cable box. LG’s guidance for older webOS versions documents cable-tuning controls, not a promise that the TV can decode your provider’s encrypted lineup: LG TV: How to set up the channel.
Ways to watch encrypted cable channels without a conventional box
CableCARD on certain older U.S. TVs
LG’s legacy U.S. TV manual describes using a CableCARD in compatible sets. The card must be registered with the cable provider; the manual says the provider uses the CableCARD ID and Host ID to enable subscribed scrambled channels. The manual’s instructions explain the process for equipment that supports it, but do not establish that a provider currently offers or provisions CableCARDs for your service: LG legacy TV manual and support materials.

Before relying on this option, give your provider the exact LG model number and ask whether it currently supports and authorizes a CableCARD for that model and your channel package. Do not buy a card based only on the TV having a coax input.
CI/CAM in some models and regions
Some LG TVs support a Conditional Access Module (CAM) inserted into a Common Interface (CI) slot. LG describes this as a way to watch some encrypted pay services, but says availability depends on the model and country’s broadcasting arrangements. The module must meet the applicable DVB-CI or CI+ requirements, and the provider’s smart card and service must be compatible: LG CI Information user guide.

A CI slot alone does not guarantee that a particular cable provider can authorize the TV. Ask the provider to confirm the exact TV, module standard, and service before purchasing a CAM.

Provider set-top box over HDMI
If your provider requires its box, connect the box to the LG TV with HDMI and select that HDMI connection as the active input. The provider’s box handles authorization and decoding; the TV displays its output. LG’s connection guidance covers selecting the external input: LG TV: How to connect a cable or satellite box.

LG Channels is separate from your cable subscription
LG Channels is an internet-based live-TV service available on supported LG smart TVs and monitors. LG’s support page lists availability in the United States; access requires an internet connection, and availability and channel lineup can vary: LG Channels overview. It may be an alternative for watching some live programming, but it does not unlock encrypted channels carried by your cable provider.

- Find the full model number on the TV’s label or in its settings, and note the country where it is being used.
- Contact the cable provider and ask which equipment it currently authorizes for encrypted channels on that exact model: a CableCARD, a CI/CAM module, or its set-top box.
- Confirm that the equipment supports your provider’s cable system and subscribed channel package, and ask how it is activated.
- If the provider requires a box, connect it by HDMI and select the corresponding external input on the LG TV.
A generic coax lead, tuner scan, or HDMI cable cannot substitute for provider authorization. Compatibility is not established without the TV model, country, and provider’s confirmation.
