If DEBUG=false still leaves your app in debug mode, the value may be reaching your code as the text string "false", not as the boolean false. In languages such as Python and JavaScript, a non-empty string is truthy. Parse the setting explicitly, then verify that the running process is reading the variable and configuration source you actually changed.

Why can an environment variable set to false act as true?

Environment variables are text-based inputs, not automatically typed booleans. Node.js documents that values loaded from a .env file are strings, including values written as 0 or true (Node.js environment variables).

That distinction matters when code checks whether a value is truthy rather than converting it to a boolean. In Python, "false", "False", and "0" are non-empty strings, so they evaluate as true in a boolean context. The same basic issue applies in JavaScript: if (process.env.DEBUG) treats the non-empty string "false" as true.

So the boolean false is not turning into true. Your application is likely treating the text spelling of false as a truthy string, or it is reading a different value than the one you intended.

How should you parse DEBUG explicitly?

Define the accepted values for your application and convert the input deliberately. A strict comparison works if the deployment contract allows exactly one spelling:

debug = os.getenv("DEBUG", "").strip().lower() == "true"

For a broader vocabulary, normalize the input, accept specific true and false spellings, and raise a clear error for anything else. Avoid relying on the truthiness of the raw environment value, and choose a default deliberately.

Framework helpers may already parse recognized values, but their behavior is specific to that framework and API. For example, Laravel documents that its env() helper reads reserved values such as false and (false) as boolean false, and its sample configuration casts APP_DEBUG to a boolean (Laravel configuration: environment variable types). That behavior should not be assumed for arbitrary PHP environment access.

Symfony’s Dotenv implementation validates the debug value and normalizes it to 1 or 0. Its debug:dotenv command can help show variable sources and loaded files (Symfony: configuring environment variables in .env files). Check the documentation for your installed Symfony version rather than assuming every project uses identical behavior.

How do you find the value the app is actually using?

  1. Inspect the value and its type where the debug flag is set. Log or print only the relevant setting, and redact secrets. Do not dump the full process environment into logs or public diagnostics.
  2. Trace the assignment. Find the framework’s debug setting and check whether it reads a raw environment value, uses a typed configuration helper, or falls back to a hard-coded default.
  3. Confirm the variable name and target process. Check the shell, CI job, container, service, or hosting-platform configuration that launches the application. A value set in one context may not reach the running process.
  4. Check configuration sources and precedence. A local file, process-level variable, or framework-specific loader may determine the effective value. Symfony’s debug:dotenv can help inspect sources. Laravel documents that a server-level APP_ENV can affect which environment file is selected (Laravel configuration: environment configuration).
  5. Restart or redeploy when needed. If configuration is read only at startup, editing a file or deployment setting will not change the already-running process until it is restarted or rebuilt.

What does this look like in Python, Node.js, Laravel, and Symfony?

Python and Django

A Django issue report describes the pitfall of assigning os.environ.get("DEBUG", False) directly: when the variable is set to the string "0" or "False", the result is still a non-empty string and is truthy (Django ticket 32893). This is a Python type-conversion problem, not evidence that Django itself converts those strings to true. Django’s settings reference defines DEBUG as a boolean setting (Django settings: DEBUG).

Node.js

Values parsed from .env files are strings, so application code must interpret them. Do not use if (process.env.DEBUG) as a boolean test when DEBUG=false may be present; parse the string or compare it explicitly.

Laravel

Laravel’s documented parsing applies to its env() helper and recognized spellings. Confirm that the code setting debug mode uses the helper and configuration path you expect; raw PHP environment access should not be presumed to behave the same way.

Symfony

Use Symfony’s Dotenv tools to inspect which files and variables are in effect, then verify the behavior against the version installed in the application. Do not generalize Symfony’s normalization or diagnostic commands to other frameworks.

What should Django deployments check when DEBUG is false?

Django’s settings reference warns, “Never deploy a site into production with DEBUG turned on.” Detailed debug error pages can expose environment metadata. The same documentation notes that ALLOWED_HOSTS must be configured correctly when DEBUG is false (Django settings: DEBUG). Verify both settings in the active settings module used by the deployed process.
