Turning off Location services in Windows 11 blocks Windows and apps from getting your device location through the Windows location service. Automatic time-zone adjustment and Find My Device depend on that setting, and location-powered app features may lose useful input. It does not switch off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, or cellular hardware, and it does not prevent every possible location estimate.
What breaks if I turn off location in Windows 11?
The effect depends on whether a feature relies on the Windows location service. Microsoft identifies automatic time-zone setting and Find My Device as Windows features enabled by device location. Apps that use location for directions, nearby places, or geofencing can also lose that input. The exact result varies by app and device, especially if the app has another way to estimate location.
- Automatic time zone: Windows can no longer use device location for automatic time-zone adjustment. The clock itself and a manually selected time zone are not documented as stopping.
- Find My Device: It requires device location to be on, as well as prior setup and the account prerequisites described below.
- Location-based app features: Directions, nearby shop or restaurant results, and geofencing may stop working as intended or become less useful.
Microsoft describes the dependency directly: “The device location setting enables certain Windows features such as auto-setting the time zone or Find my device to function properly.” Microsoft’s Windows location service and privacy guidance explains the setting and its effects.

No. Find My Device needs device location enabled, so turning off Location services removes a prerequisite for locating the PC. You must also have enabled Find My Device beforehand and use a personal Microsoft account with an administrator account. Microsoft says users on the device receive a notification when someone attempts to locate it.

Does turning off location stop apps tracking me?
It blocks apps from getting device location through Windows Location services while that service is off. That is broader than turning off permission for one app, but it is not a universal block against every way an app or service might infer where you are.

Choose the scope that fits
| Control | Scope | Feature impact | Privacy reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device Location services | Whole device; an administrator controls whether the service can be used. | Windows features and apps that rely on the Windows location service lose access. | Blocks location through that service, but does not stop every alternate estimate. |
| “Let apps access your location” | Your user account. | Apps cannot get location through Windows for that user; it does not restore access if device Location services is off. | Restricts Windows-mediated app access for your account, not other location methods. |
| Permission for an individual app | One app, when the location service is available. | That app loses its Windows location permission; other permitted apps and Windows features may still use location. | Narrower than turning off app access for your account or device Location services. |
| Turning off a radio such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth | A hardware connection, not the Windows location permission. | Can disrupt internet access, messaging, calls, or connected peripherals, depending on the radio and device. | Different from disabling Windows Location services; it does not amount to a universal privacy guarantee. |
In Windows 11, the main controls are under Settings > Privacy & security > Location. When Location services is available, you can manage app access and review recent access activity. Microsoft’s Windows privacy settings that apps use describes app permissions and the limits of those controls.

Does disabling location turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?
No. Turning off Location services does not itself turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, or cellular hardware. Those radios and the location permission are separate controls. However, location can be estimated using signals such as nearby Wi-Fi access points, cell towers, GPS, IP address, or a configured default location. Microsoft notes that some third-party software may use alternate signals even when Windows Location services is off.
So the setting stops access through the Windows location service; it does not guarantee that no software can make any location estimate. Turning off a radio is a separate, more disruptive action and can affect connectivity or peripherals.

What exceptions remain when Location services is off?
Microsoft documents two important qualifications. First, a limited set of Windows experiences may use IP address for general area context—for example, taskbar weather. Second, Windows will attempt to determine and share precise location for an emergency call regardless of location settings. Microsoft states: “To facilitate getting help in an emergency, whenever you make an emergency call, Windows will attempt to determine and share your precise location, regardless of your location settings.”
What happens to Windows location history?
Older instructions may refer to local Windows location-history storage and its associated settings, but Microsoft says those were removed in March 2025. Location may still be periodically saved to the cloud for a signed-in Microsoft account when Location services is enabled. Microsoft says this cloud location activity can be cleared from the Microsoft account location activity page; it is distinct from the removed local-history controls. See Microsoft’s current location-service guidance for the account and history details.

How to choose the right setting
- To stop Windows-mediated location access across the PC: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location and turn off Location services, if the control is available. This affects dependent Windows features as well as app access through the service.
- To keep Windows features but restrict apps for your account: On the same Location page, turn off Let apps access your location. This is a user-level control, not the device-wide switch.
- To restrict one app: Leave the service available and change that app’s location permission on the Location page, if it is listed. For desktop apps or browsers, review the app’s own controls and privacy information too.
- If you rely on Find My Device: Keep device Location services on and confirm Find My Device was enabled in advance. Its account and administrator requirements are listed in Microsoft’s Find and lock a lost Windows device instructions.
If Windows says the setting is managed by your organization, an administrator may control device-wide Location services and you may not be able to change it yourself. Microsoft also lists Find My Device as a connected experience with a location prerequisite in its Essential services and connected experiences for Windows documentation.
