To connect a game controller, first check its exact model against the target device, then use a supported Bluetooth, USB, or model-specific wireless connection. Pairing or plugging in only confirms that the device can see the controller; the game must also support it, and some buttons or features may not work on every platform.
Choose a connection method your controller and device both support
- Bluetooth: Put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode, open Bluetooth settings on the device, and select the controller. The pairing button or button combination differs by model.
- USB: Connect the controller with a cable and ports that support the required connection. A cable that charges a device may not carry data, so it may not work for controller input.
- Wireless adapter: Use one only if the controller maker specifies that adapter for your exact model and host. Wireless adapters are not universal.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting: controller, operating system, device, and game support are separate questions. A controller can connect successfully at the system level while a game does not recognize it or does not support all of its features.
Connect a controller to a PC, Mac, or mobile device
Bluetooth pairing
- Check the controller maker’s current compatibility information for your model and target device.
- Charge the controller. If its instructions require it, unplug any cable before starting Bluetooth pairing.
- Use the controller’s model-specific button or combination to enter pairing mode.
- Open the host device’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller from the available devices.
- Launch the game and check its controller settings or support information. A system connection does not guarantee in-game support.
Apple says compatible wireless Xbox, PlayStation, and other Bluetooth controllers can connect to iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. Apple’s pairing instructions are at Connect a wireless games controller to your Apple device. Button and feature support—including audio jacks and lights—varies by controller and app.

Use a data-capable cable that matches the controller and host ports. For DualSense, Sony specifies a USB Type-C cable for wired connections to supported devices. Apple notes that some controllers can pair and connect automatically when plugged directly into an Apple device with a cable that supports both data and charging. Check the exact controller documentation; a USB connection is not guaranteed to work on every host.

DualSense compatibility example
Sony documents DualSense Bluetooth and USB support for Windows 10 (64-bit), macOS Big Sur 11.3, iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5, and Android 12 or later. Sony’s broader controller guidance also lists Android TV OS 12. These are Sony’s stated thresholds for DualSense, not general requirements for other controllers. DualSense features can vary by device and game. Sony says haptic feedback works only in supported games, is not supported on Mac or mobile devices, and may require USB on Windows. PC controller support also varies by game; check the game’s controller-support listing, such as its Steam listing where applicable.

Pair a controller with a console
Follow the console maker’s pairing instructions for the exact controller and console. Do not assume a controller that works with a phone or PC will work natively with another console.

Nintendo Switch controller limits and indicators
Nintendo says the number of controllers that can connect depends on controller type, features, and whether local communication is being used. When Bluetooth audio is connected, the Switch supports no more than two wireless controllers. This is a Switch-specific limit, not a general rule for other devices. - Unlit LEDs: the controller is not connected or its link was cut.
- Sequentially flashing LEDs: connection is in progress.
- One or more solid LEDs: the controller is connected.
- Flashing LEDs: the battery charge is very low.
Fix common connection problems
- Confirm the basics: Check the exact controller model and generation, charge it, and verify that the host’s operating system meets the maker’s requirements.
- Retry Bluetooth pairing: Make sure the controller is in pairing mode. If it was paired with another host, disconnect it there or remove the old pairing if needed; switching behavior varies by manufacturer.
- Check the wired setup: Try a cable and port that support data and match the controller. For DualSense, Sony specifies USB Type-C for wired use on supported devices.
- Update and pair again: Install available updates for the host and controller, where the maker provides them. On Apple devices, Apple recommends forgetting the controller and pairing it again.
- Reduce possible Bluetooth interference: If the connection is unreliable, disconnect other nearby Bluetooth devices and retry. Apple includes this among its troubleshooting suggestions.
- Test in the game: Check whether the game supports controllers and whether its settings need adjustment. Some functions may remain unavailable even when basic input works.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance is in its controller connection support article. For other platforms, use the controller maker’s instructions for the specific model rather than applying another brand’s steps.
