If Firefox stops loading HTTPS websites, note the exact error code and check whether the problem affects one site, many sites, or every browser. That pattern helps separate a website certificate or TLS problem from a device clock, Firefox setting, security tool, or network issue. Work through the checks below without disabling certificate protections or clicking through warnings as a routine fix.
First, identify what is failing
Write down the complete Firefox warning and any code shown on the page. Then try another HTTPS website and open the affected site in a different browser.
- One site fails in every browser: The site may be down or have a certificate or server configuration problem.
- Several sites fail only in Firefox: Check Firefox’s connection settings and software that may inspect or redirect its traffic.
- Sites fail in every browser: Investigate the device’s network connection, DNS, security software, Wi-Fi, or internet provider.
These checks narrow the cause; they do not by themselves prove whether a server or local network is responsible. Mozilla’s secure-connection troubleshooting guide describes common causes and error codes.

Fix certificate warnings safely
Check the device’s clock
Confirm that the date, time, and time zone are correct. A clock that is ahead or behind can make a valid certificate appear expired or not yet valid. Mozilla explains this cause in its guide to time-related errors on secure websites.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Use the error code to distinguish possible causes
SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER and MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_MITM_DETECTED can indicate that Firefox does not trust the certificate authority presented to it, or that something is intercepting the connection. If they appear on many sites, check for HTTPS inspection by antivirus software, a proxy, a corporate network, or another security appliance. If the device is managed by an employer or school, ask its IT administrator before changing certificates or security policy.
If only one site triggers a certificate warning and the clock is correct, its certificate may be expired, self-signed, or incorrectly configured—for example, the server may not provide an intermediate certificate. The site owner or administrator must correct a server-side certificate problem. Mozilla’s explanation of secure-connection warnings describes these errors and the limits on bypassing them.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Check software and connection settings
VPN and antivirus inspection
If the problem began after installing or updating a VPN or antivirus program, update it and review its encrypted-traffic or HTTPS-scanning settings. You can temporarily disconnect from a VPN to see whether it is involved; restore it after the test. Avoid leaving security protection disabled as a workaround.

Review Firefox’s connection or proxy settings if a proxy is configured or the issue began after moving to another network. A proxy that is unavailable or incorrectly configured can prevent secure connections. Mozilla includes proxy and security software among the causes covered in its secure-connection guide.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
DNS over HTTPS
If DNS over HTTPS (DoH) appears connected to the problem, temporarily turn it off or add the affected site to the exceptions list. Mozilla’s DoH guide explains that protection modes behave differently: Default Protection can fall back to system DNS and respond to network policy, while stricter modes continue using secure DNS or warn if the selected resolver cannot be reached.
Know when the website must be fixed
Outdated TLS support
SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION indicates that the site is using an outdated TLS version. Firefox requires TLS 1.2 or later by default; changing a local setting is not the right fix for an outdated server. Mozilla’s secure-connection guide says, “Firefox protects you by preventing navigation to such sites.” Contact the site owner and ask them to support a current secure TLS version.

Other connection failures
Errors such as SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG or PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR can involve a VPN, DoH, antivirus inspection, proxy, or other network interference. If the affected site also fails in another browser, check whether the site is unavailable and contact its owner or administrator. Mozilla’s general website-loading troubleshooting guide covers broader connection failures.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not bypass certificate warnings as a fix
Firefox may not offer an override when a site uses HSTS, a certificate error is considered critical, or an organization’s policy disables bypasses. Mozilla notes that expired-certificate blocks generally cannot be bypassed because of interception risks. Even when an override is available, proceeding can expose you to an unsafe or impersonated connection. Do not install an unknown root certificate or weaken Firefox’s protections to force a page to load.
