Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) originally meant mean solar time at the Greenwich meridian. Today, it is also commonly used as a civil-time-zone label for UTC+00:00. For everyday clock times, GMT and UTC are usually interchangeable; for precise timekeeping, they are different concepts.
What does Greenwich Mean Time mean?
Historically, GMT was the mean solar time at the Greenwich meridian, the line of zero degrees longitude associated with the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. “Mean” means that the Sun’s changing apparent motion is averaged to produce clock days of uniform length. The Royal Observatory describes GMT in this historical sense as local mean time at Greenwich (Royal Observatory Greenwich: The astronomical basis of timekeeping).
The phrase now has a common second use: GMT can label the civil time zone at UTC+00:00. In that context it represents UTC for local clock time, rather than the original astronomical meaning. NIST explains this distinction in its guide to UTC, GMT, USNO, GPS and Zulu time.

Shared time became increasingly useful as railways and navigation needed consistent schedules and references. In Great Britain, railway companies introduced common time for their networks. By 1855, 98% of public clocks in Great Britain showed GMT, according to the Royal Observatory’s historical account; this is a figure for that historical period, not a current statistic (Royal Observatory Greenwich: Clocks & Time).

In 1880, GMT became legal time in Great Britain. In 1884, the International Meridian Conference defined the meridian through the Royal Greenwich Observatory as zero degrees longitude, strengthening Greenwich’s role as an international reference point (NIST: Everyday Time and Atomic Time, Part 4).
Is GMT the same as UTC?
For ordinary civil-time use, GMT is commonly treated as equivalent to UTC+00:00. But GMT’s original astronomical meaning is tied to Earth’s rotation, while UTC is an atomic time scale adjusted with leap seconds to remain within less than one second of UT1, the modern astronomical time scale associated with Earth’s rotation. NIST notes that when GMT labels the zero-offset civil time zone, it is a local representation of UTC, not UT1.

- Everyday schedules and clock displays: GMT and UTC are usually interchangeable when fractions of a second are irrelevant.
- Scientific or subsecond-sensitive work: Specify the intended scale, such as UTC or UT1, instead of relying on the potentially ambiguous abbreviation GMT.
The Royal Observatory’s account of the atomic clocks of the Greenwich Time Service provides further context on modern timekeeping.
Is the UK always on GMT?
No. The United Kingdom uses GMT in winter and British Summer Time in summer. UTC itself does not change for daylight saving; seasonal clock changes are a local civil-time rule, not a change to the UTC time scale. The Royal Observatory discusses the distinction in its account of the astronomical basis of timekeeping.

How to interpret GMT in a schedule or source
- Identify the context. A historical or astronomical discussion may mean mean solar time or refer to the UT1-related concept. A modern schedule may use GMT as a civil-time label.
- Check the required precision. For ordinary clock time, a GMT label commonly means UTC+00:00. For technical work, confirm which time scale is intended.
- Check the location and season. A local clock may observe daylight saving even when a reference is described as GMT or UTC; confirm the jurisdiction’s rules before converting a time.
