To clear direct-message spam, use the controls for the app where it arrived: delete or ignore a request to clear it from your view, report suspected spam to the platform, and block repeat senders. These actions are not interchangeable. In particular, deleting a conversation usually does not mean it was retracted for everyone; check the app’s wording before you act.
Choose the action that matches what you want

If a message contains a suspicious link, asks for your password, or invites you to add an unfamiliar bot to a server, do not follow the link, share credentials, or grant access. Report the message using the platform’s controls.
Delete or report DMs on X
Delete a message or conversation
X says deleting a DM or conversation removes it from your inbox. Its help page does not say this retracts the content for everyone else in the conversation, so do not treat inbox deletion as a recall feature. See X’s direct-message guidance.
Report a message or conversation
- To report one message, open the conversation and open the menu for that message.
- To report the conversation, use the controls for that conversation in the inbox.
- Select the appropriate report reason; spam is among the reportable categories.
Important: X says a reported message or conversation is removed from your messages inbox and cannot be recovered. If you may need the conversation for your own records, consider that consequence before reporting. Reporting is separate from blocking; use the available account controls if you also want to prevent further contact.

Handle Discord message requests and spam
Review the Spam tab
Discord keeps Message Requests separate from the main DM list. Open Message Requests, then select the Spam tab to inspect a request. From there, Discord provides controls to accept, report, or ignore it. Its support article says DM spam filtering defaults to filter all; see Discord’s Message Requests guidance.
Adjust who can send requests
Discord’s available request settings can depend on account age, server membership, mutual friends, and messaging permissions. Adult users can turn off Message Requests globally or for a server; teen and unconfirmed users cannot turn the feature off. Because the options are not identical for every account, use the settings shown in your own app rather than assuming a single control applies to everyone.

Block and report suspicious senders
Discord advises reporting DMs that direct you to suspicious links or that come from bots soliciting access to a server. Blocking a user stops that user from sending you DMs. Discord also says it will not ask for your password by email or DM. See Discord’s spam and hacking advice and its account-safety guidance.

Delete or report a message request
- Open Inbox, then Message requests.
- Select the request. If it is not visible in the main request list, check Filtered requests.
- Choose whether to accept, delete, or report the request.
Deleting a request clears that request from your inbox; it is not the same action as deleting a message you sent. TikTok’s direct-message settings guidance covers request controls and message deletion.

Report a message or chat
- Open Inbox and the chat.
- To report one message, press and hold that message. To report the chat, select More options at the top.
- Choose a reason, then select Report or Report and block, as appropriate.

Understand the two message-deletion choices
For a message you sent, TikTok distinguishes Delete for me from Delete for everyone. Its help page says the latter is available within three minutes of sending. These choices concern a sent message and should not be confused with deleting a request from your inbox.

What to do with Instagram or Facebook message spam
Meta’s December 2021 overview described safer private-message measures for Instagram and Facebook, including reviewing chat requests, delivery controls, and bulk deletion of requests. That overview is historical, so it does not establish current menu names or steps for either app. Use the current controls shown in your app to review, delete, or report an unwanted request; do not assume the X, Discord, or TikTok paths apply.

Reduce unwanted DMs going forward
- Check the app’s message-request, spam, or filtered-request area instead of opening an unexpected message from a notification.
- Use available delivery and contact controls to limit who can reach you.
- Block repeat senders, and report messages that appear to be scams or policy violations.
- Never give your password to someone claiming to be platform staff, and avoid suspicious links or unsolicited requests to add bots to a server.
