Microsoft Defender can keep prompting because a detected item still needs an action, a potentially unwanted app remains blocked but unresolved, cleanup did not finish, or Windows Security is reporting a protection status. Open Windows Security > Protection history and inspect the newest relevant alert first. The alert card—not the fact that it appeared again—tells you what to do.
What a recurring Windows Defender alert means
Windows Security’s Protection history can show threats that need a decision, items that have been blocked or quarantined, incomplete cleanup, potentially unwanted apps (PUAs), and messages about protection services that are off. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Labels and navigation can vary with Windows version, updates, language, and organization policy.
A repeated prompt does not, by itself, establish that a threat is currently active. The event’s status and available actions are more useful than the banner alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck Protection history first
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu or Windows search.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the newest card related to the prompt, expand it, and read the detection name, status, and action options.
Protection history retains events for two weeks; older items may no longer appear. Microsoft says administrator privileges are required to review threat details. On a work or school device, your organization may control settings or alert handling.
Choose the action that matches the alert
| What the card says or shows | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Threat found – action needed” | Defender found a possible threat and needs a decision. | If you are unsure whether the file is safe, choose quarantine. Allowing an unsafe file can put your data, personal information, or device at risk. |
| Quarantined or blocked | The item has been blocked, but it may not have been removed. | Choose the available removal action if you do not need the item. Restoring it can cause Defender to detect it again. |
| “Remediation incomplete” | Defender could not finish cleaning the item. | Expand the card and follow its listed next steps. |
| Potentially unwanted app | A PUA is not necessarily malware, but it may cause unwanted ads, slow performance, or install other software. | Choose an action and select Start actions. Leaving it merely blocked can allow it to be detected again in later scans. |
| Service or protection status message | The alert may concern a security feature being off rather than a newly found file. For example, Protection history can report that SmartScreen for Edge is off. | Read the status details and address the indicated setting if appropriate. |
Microsoft recommends leaving potentially unwanted app blocking enabled and turning on both app and download blocking where those options are available. See Microsoft’s PUA guidance for the relevant settings. The path differs across Windows layouts; older Windows 10 versions may use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security, while newer layouts place the controls under Reputation-based protection settings.

Scan and remove unwanted software
If the card indicates a threat or you suspect unwanted software is still on the PC, update Defender’s security intelligence and run a full scan. Uninstall software you do not recognize or no longer need. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance and Virus & threat protection information describe these options.
- In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection and check for security intelligence updates.
- Run a Full scan if you suspect unwanted software may be present.
- If the problem persists, consider a Microsoft Defender Offline scan. It restarts the computer, so save open work first. Review the result in Protection history afterward.
When another antivirus product is installed, Microsoft Defender Antivirus may switch to disabled mode automatically. Microsoft says Defender should return to active mode when that product is uninstalled. Check the device’s protection providers rather than treating a Defender status message as proof of an infection.

Turn off optional notification banners—not protection
If Protection history shows only an informational message and no action is needed, you can adjust optional Windows Security notifications. In Windows Security, open Settings > Manage notifications to change available security-notification categories. Windows also lets you manage app banners and notification-center display under Settings > System > Notifications. Microsoft notes that notifications about problems requiring immediate action continue to appear.
These controls change how some messages are shown; they do not resolve a threat or switch off Defender. Do not turn off real-time protection as a routine way to stop prompts: files opened or downloaded while it is off are not scanned during that period. If one trusted file or folder must be excluded, Microsoft identifies an exclusion as a narrower alternative to disabling antivirus protection; see how to scan an item with Windows Security.

If Windows Security settings are locked, the alert refers to managed protection, or you cannot review the threat details, contact your work or school IT administrator. Organization policy may determine which controls are available and how a detection should be handled. Microsoft’s Windows Security settings guidance covers notification controls and managed-device limitations.
