A passive capacitive stylus can stop registering because its tip is dirty, worn, damaged, or poorly matched to the touchscreen—but the screen or device may be the real cause. Test touch input with a finger, inspect and clean the tip according to its maker’s instructions, and check the exact model’s replacement guidance before buying a new tip or stylus. There is no established universal replacement interval for passive styluses.
What a passive stylus does—and what it does not do
A passive capacitive stylus works much like a finger: it has no battery and couples with the touchscreen through a conductive tip. Common tip materials include rubber and conductive foam. A disc is another design; Adonit describes its Pro 4 as a battery-free, non-Bluetooth stylus that uses a disc to interact with touchscreens. That construction is specific to that model, not a description of every passive stylus. HP’s explanation of passive and active styluses and Adonit’s Pro 4 support page describe these approaches.
Compatibility is not guaranteed just because both devices use touchscreens. A tip with too little contact area may not register reliably on some screens. Passive styluses also do not automatically provide the fine-point writing, pressure sensitivity, hover, or palm rejection associated with compatible active pens. If you need those features, check that the device supports the particular active pen; a passive stylus is not a substitute for an active digitizer.

The tip is dirty
Debris or residue can interfere with contact. For the Pro 4 specifically, Adonit recommends rubbing its disc back and forth on a microfiber cloth, then inspecting it. Tip materials and designs vary, so do not assume that this cleaning method is suitable for every stylus; follow the maker’s directions.

- 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
- 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. However, it allows for tapping, scrolling, note-taking, and drawing on touchscreens; if you require professional-grade drawing capabilities on an iPad, please choose an active stylus instead.

It is ideal for writing, sketching, annotating, scrolling, and precise screen control on tablets and smartphones. From daily tasks to creative projects, this stylus helps you capture ideas anytime and anywhere.
The tip is worn or damaged
Adonit says the Pro 4 disc can wear over time. A visibly damaged tip, or persistent skipping after cleaning, is a reason to check whether the manufacturer offers a replacement part. Wear guidance for active pens does not establish a wear schedule for passive styluses.
The tip and screen are a poor match
Some screens may not detect a tip with too little surface area. A stylus may therefore work on one touchscreen but perform poorly on another. Confirm that the stylus is intended for the device and that its tip design registers reliably.

The touchscreen or device is at fault
Test the same screen area with a finger. If finger input also fails, the problem is not confirmed to be the stylus; investigate the touchscreen or device instead. Other device-specific factors can affect recognition, but guidance written for an active pen should not automatically be applied to every passive stylus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to troubleshoot before replacing anything
- Test finger input. Try touching the same area of the screen with a finger. If that also fails, troubleshoot the touchscreen rather than assuming the stylus is worn out. HP recommends this check.
- Inspect and clean the tip. Look for dirt, deformation, cracks, or other visible damage. Use the stylus maker’s cleaning instructions. For the Adonit Pro 4 disc only, Adonit specifies a microfiber cloth and inspection after cleaning. See Adonit’s model-specific guidance.
- Isolate the device or stylus, if possible. Try the stylus on another touchscreen known to be compatible, or try a known-compatible stylus on the original device. This diagnostic comparison can help identify which side is failing; compatibility must be checked before interpreting the result.
- Confirm the input technology. Check whether the device expects ordinary capacitive touch or a specific active pen. A battery-free capacitive stylus and an active digital pen can look similar while relying on different input methods. HP explains the distinction.
- Look up replacement instructions for the exact model. Replace a tip only when the manufacturer supports it and specifies a compatible part. If the tip is not replaceable, or the stylus remains damaged or unreliable after reasonable checks, contact the manufacturer or replace the stylus.
When to replace the tip or the whole stylus
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a standard lifespan measured in months, hours, or strokes for passive styluses. Use the condition of the tip, the result of troubleshooting, and the exact model’s support instructions—not a calendar schedule.

Replacement designs differ, including among products marketed as styluses:
| Example | What the manufacturer says | What it means for replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Adonit Pro 4 passive stylus | Its disc can get dirty or wear over time; Adonit provides guidance for a replacement disc kit. Adonit support. | Check that the stylus is the Pro 4 and use the part specified for that model; do not assume the disc fits other styluses. |
| ZAGG Pro Stylus hybrid | ZAGG says the active front tip is replaceable, while the capacitive back-end tip is not individually replaceable. ZAGG’s replacement instructions. | Which end is damaged matters; the capacitive tip does not have the same replacement option as the active tip. |
| Huawei M-Pencil family | Huawei’s guidance concerns active pens: it advises replacement when internal metal is exposed and warns that tips are not interchangeable across all generations. Huawei support. | This is an active-pen example, not a passive-stylus rule. Verify the exact generation before choosing a tip. |
| Samsung S Pen models in the U.S. support guidance | Samsung says tips are not available for purchase for Galaxy S23 Ultra or newer models covered by its instructions; a damaged tip requires a new S Pen. Samsung support. | This applies to the specified S Pen models, not passive styluses generally. |
These examples show why a replacement part should be matched to the exact model and, where applicable, generation. A tip that fits one stylus may not fit another. If the manufacturer does not list a replaceable tip, do not force a generic part or disassemble the stylus based on assumptions.

What to compare if you need a different stylus
- Compatibility: Determine whether the device accepts passive capacitive input or requires a particular active pen and digitizer.
- Tip design: Compare rubber or conductive foam tips with disc-style tips, and confirm that the screen reliably detects the design.
- Replacement support: Check whether the tip can be replaced, which exact model or generation it fits, and whether damage means replacing the whole stylus.
- Features: For simple taps and navigation, passive input may be sufficient. For fine-point writing, pressure sensitivity, hover, or palm rejection, verify that both the device and a compatible active pen support the feature. Most passive styluses do not provide the active-pen feature set, according to HP.
