Chrome has separate controls for window dimensions, page zoom, font size, and tab layout. Use your computer’s window controls to resize a normal Chrome window; use More (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Appearance for default page zoom, font size, and tab position. Page zoom changes webpage content, not the browser window itself.
Resize the Chrome window itself
To change the dimensions of a normal, non-full-screen Chrome window, use your operating system’s window controls—for example, its title bar, edges, or maximize/restore buttons. Chrome’s help documentation does not specify the steps for resizing an ordinary window, and the exact controls depend on your operating system.
Page zoom and full-screen mode are different: zoom changes the size of webpage content, while full-screen makes Chrome fill the screen.

Adjust the current page
- Open Chrome’s More menu.
- Use the Zoom controls to make the page larger or smaller.
Zoom changes text, images, and videos together. Keyboard shortcuts are Ctrl and + to enlarge and Ctrl and – to reduce on Windows and Linux; use Command and + or Command and – on Mac. ChromeOS also documents Ctrl and + and Ctrl and –. Google Chrome Help: Change text, image & video sizes (zoom).

Set a default zoom
- Open More > Settings > Appearance.
- Choose a value beside Page zoom.
This default applies across webpages. Individual sites can have their own saved zoom levels. To review or remove a site-specific level, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Zoom levels, then select X beside the site to remove its saved setting. Menu wording can vary by Chrome release. Google Chrome Help.
Change font size without zooming everything
- Open More > Settings > Appearance.
- Choose an option beside Font size. For more choices, select Customize fonts.
Unlike page zoom, this setting is intended to change text rather than enlarge all page content. Some websites prevent browsers from changing text size alone, so the setting may not affect every page as expected. Google Chrome Help.

Move tabs to the side or make the tab strip more compact
Show tabs vertically
To put tabs in a side strip, right-click blank space in the tab strip and choose Show Tabs Vertically. Alternatively, open Settings > Appearance and select Vertical under Tab position. In vertical mode, page titles appear in a scrollable list, and you can resize the strip’s width. To return to the usual top-of-window layout, choose Show Tabs Horizontally or set Tab position to Horizontal. Depending on the platform and Chrome version, the option may also be available through Chrome’s More menu or, on Mac, the View menu. Google Chrome Help: Manage tabs in Chrome.

Pin tabs to save strip space
For a more compact horizontal tab strip, right-click a tab and choose Pin. Pinned tabs are smaller and show only the site icon. Pinning changes how tabs occupy the strip; it does not resize the Chrome window. Google Chrome Help.

Use full-screen mode when you want Chrome to fill the display
Full-screen is not the same as resizing a normal window. Chrome lists full-screen mode in the Zoom menu and documents these shortcuts: F11 on Windows and Linux, Command + Control + F on Mac, and the full-screen key identified as F4 on ChromeOS. Chrome’s help says that browser controls such as tabs are hidden in full-screen on ChromeOS. Google Chrome Help.
