The Bose SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) is a genuinely pocket-sized, rugged Bluetooth speaker with mono sound, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C charging and an IP67 rating. Bose estimates up to 12 hours of playback, but the speaker does not float. Its strongest case is portability; the main question is whether that convenience justifies paying more than for larger or less expensive alternatives.
What the Bose SoundLink Micro 2 is—and what it is not
This is the second generation of Bose’s SoundLink Micro portable speaker. Bose lists Bluetooth 5.4, mono playback, a fabric utility strap and USB-C charging. The USB-C port is for charging only: Bose says the speaker does not support USB audio. It also has no microphone, so it is not a speakerphone.
Bose specifies Bluetooth range of up to 30 feet (9 meters). Actual range can vary with obstacles and interference. The small size and strap make it practical to carry or attach to a bag, but its mono design and compact form are aimed at portability rather than filling a large room.
How good is the sound?
TechRadar’s March 22, 2026 review describes the second-generation model as improved and its audio as balanced, while questioning whether the premium is worthwhile beside cheaper alternatives. Tom’s Guide reached a similar broad assessment in its September 25, 2026 review: it praised the balance and portability but noted less expensive speakers with comparable sound and better battery life. Those are the outlets’ listening judgments, not Bose specifications or a claim of independent testing here.
#1 Best Overall
- SURPRISINGLY POWERFUL SOUND: SoundLink Micro’s crisp sound and impressive bass allows you to use this mini wireless speaker to break through any silence and form an in-the-moment connection.
- ULTRA-PORTABLE SIZE: The SoundLink Micro Speaker is designed to be ultra portable. A pocketable size and an improved utility strap mean you can attach the small Bluetooth speaker to a bag, slip it in a pocket, or play it from the palm of your hand.
- DURABLE DESIGN: A rugged, tiny-but-tough design means the SoundLink Micro Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) is built to bounce back. It’s dust and waterproof (rated IP67) and shock and rust resistant — so this small waterproof speaker can play rain or shine.
- UP TO 12 HOURS OF EXTENDED BATTERY: With double the battery life of the original SoundLink Micro, you can keep the connection going for up to 12 hours of your day.
- ADVANCED BLUETOOTH CONNECTIVITY: With an extended range of up to 30 feet and increased bandwidth, Bluetooth now brings you better connectivity over previous versions.
For a tiny speaker that travels easily, those assessments make the Micro 2 appealing. If sound-per-dollar or longer playback matters more than minimum size, compare it with larger compact speakers before buying.
Battery life: up to 12 hours, under Bose’s conditions
Bose rates the battery for up to 12 hours per charge. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. Bose’s stated test conditions include Bluetooth A2DP audio at 50% volume, default EQ, and an ambient temperature of 68–77°F (20–25°C), using a mix of Top 50 Global tracks as of November 2024. Bose says actual battery performance varies with audio content, volume and temperature.

Bose includes a USB-C-to-A charging cable but not a power adapter, so you may need a compatible USB power supply if you do not already have one. Bose materials give conflicting full-charge estimates: its UK support specifications say four hours from empty with a 1.5A (7.5W) supply, while a U.S. listing says three hours. Because the published figures differ, do not rely on either as a universal charge time.

Waterproofing does not mean it floats
The SoundLink Micro 2 has an IP67 dust- and water-protection rating, according to Bose. That rating should not be confused with buoyancy: Bose explicitly says the speaker sinks rather than floats. It is therefore not a floating pool speaker, and you should not expect it to stay on the surface if dropped in water.

SoundLink Micro 2 vs. JBL Clip 5 and Wonderboom 4
These alternatives illustrate the trade-off between the Bose’s very small format and other compact-speaker choices. The figures below are comparison information reported by TechRadar in its 2026 review, not a fresh side-by-side test. Check current manufacturer specifications and prices before deciding.
| Speaker | Battery figure reported | Dust/water rating reported | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bose SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) | Up to 12 hours per Bose; manufacturer estimate under stated conditions | IP67; Bose says it sinks rather than floats | Very compact size, strap, mono playback and Bose’s current U.S. price |
| JBL Clip 5 | 12 hours, as listed in TechRadar’s comparison | IP67, as listed in TechRadar’s comparison | Compare mounting style, size and current price; figures are not a direct test against Bose |
| Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 | 14 hours, as listed in TechRadar’s comparison | IP67, as listed in TechRadar’s comparison | Compare its larger form factor and current price against the Bose’s pocket-sized design |
The battery and rating figures for the JBL and Ultimate Ears models above are comparison figures from TechRadar, not independently verified current specifications here. They do not establish whether either alternative floats. Choose based on the dimensions, attachment method and current offer that suit your use—not the rating alone.

TechRadar’s 2026 review cited a $129 U.S. launch price; that historical launch figure is not a current price guarantee.
