If Outlook is running slowly, first identify whether you’re using new Outlook or classic Outlook for Windows. Their troubleshooting steps differ. Start with a restart, a check for work still running, and updates; then use classic Outlook’s Safe Mode to test add-ins before moving on to profile, data-file, or Office repairs.

1. Identify whether you use new Outlook or classic Outlook

Some fixes apply only to classic Outlook. Check whether the new Outlook toggle is on, or otherwise confirm which app you opened. Microsoft’s general Outlook performance guidance separates the two versions. Its classic Outlook freeze instructions do not apply to new Outlook.

App What to know
New Outlook Use guidance labeled for new Outlook. COM add-ins and classic Outlook’s File > Options paths do not apply.
Classic Outlook Safe Mode, COM add-in controls, and the classic-specific profile and data-file steps below apply.

2. Restart Outlook only after checking for background work

Classic Outlook: check the status bar

Outlook can appear frozen while it processes a large attachment, synchronizes a mailbox, runs auto-archive, or moves or deletes hundreds or thousands of messages. Check the status bar and allow the operation a little time to finish before force-closing Outlook. Microsoft lists these kinds of background tasks among reasons classic Outlook may stop responding temporarily.

New Outlook: end the unresponsive task

If new Outlook has stopped responding, Microsoft recommends ending its task in Windows Task Manager and reopening the app. Save work elsewhere first if possible; ending a task can discard unsaved changes.

3. Install Windows and Office updates

Check Windows Update and install available Microsoft 365 or Office updates. Microsoft says updates can replace outdated files and deliver bug fixes and performance enhancements. Updating is a sensible early step, not proof that an outdated version caused the slowdown. See Microsoft’s Outlook performance troubleshooting guidance and freeze troubleshooting guidance.

4. Test classic Outlook in Safe Mode for add-in problems

Safe Mode starts classic Outlook without add-ins loaded, making it a useful diagnostic test. Microsoft Support notes, “Sometimes add-ins can conflict with classic Outlook for Windows.” If Outlook is noticeably faster in Safe Mode, an add-in may be contributing to the problem.

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter.
  2. Compare Outlook’s performance with normal mode. If it is still slow, the test does not point to an add-in as the likely cause.
  3. If it is faster, close Outlook and reopen it normally. Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
  4. At the bottom of the window, set Manage to COM Add-ins, then select Go.
  5. Record which items are enabled, clear their checkboxes, and restart Outlook.
  6. Re-enable one add-in at a time, restarting Outlook after each change, until the slowdown returns. That helps identify the likely culprit.

Disable add-ins during this test; do not select Remove. Microsoft explains that COM add-ins are separate programs that can add latency when changing folders, receiving mail, or opening calendar items. COM add-ins are not supported in new Outlook. See Microsoft’s guidance on slow Outlook add-ins.

5. Check for data-file and indexing issues

Microsoft lists large PST or OST files, Windows Search indexing, profile damage, incomplete data-file closure, redirected AppData, RSS feeds, and some Exchange configurations as possible contributors to classic Outlook performance problems. These are clues to investigate, not proof of the cause.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Microsoft Support’s older guidance says PST/OST files up to 5 GB should provide a good experience on most hardware, while performance at 5–10 GB is typically hardware-dependent; the page does not state its publication year. Treat those figures as historical guidance, not a current universal limit. Don’t delete messages solely to reach a file-size target. See Microsoft’s classic Outlook performance article.

  • If Windows Search is indexing mail, give it time to finish and see whether performance improves.
  • If your account uses an organization-managed Exchange configuration, ask your IT administrator before changing settings.
  • Avoid casual registry edits or disabling security tools as speed fixes; these can introduce risk and require careful evaluation.

6. Test classic Outlook with a new profile

A classic Outlook profile contains account and application settings, and Microsoft says a profile can become corrupted. Creating a new profile and launching Outlook with it can show whether the old profile is implicated: if the slowdown disappears in the new one, the old profile is a likely factor.

7. Repair Outlook data files or Office

If simpler checks have not helped, Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, ScanPST, can scan Outlook data files and repair errors. If Outlook files or Office components may be damaged, Microsoft recommends trying Office Quick Repair first, followed by Online Repair if Quick Repair does not resolve the problem. These repairs take more time and may require closing Office apps. Choose the instructions for your Outlook and Office version in Microsoft’s Office application repair guide and Outlook data-file repair guide.

8. Check known issues before trying old workarounds

Microsoft’s known-issues page changes as updates and fixes are released. It was marked “Last updated: October 2026” when checked on October 7, 2026, and included issues associated with the September and October 2026 updates. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee those issues remain active. Check Microsoft’s classic Outlook known-issues page for your symptom and update channel before trying old registry workarounds or reinstalling.

9. Escalate if the cause remains unclear

If version-appropriate troubleshooting has not resolved the slowdown, use Microsoft’s guided support or contact your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator. Describe whether the problem affects new or classic Outlook, when it began, whether it occurs in Safe Mode, and which steps you have already tried.

The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal hardware or accessory purchase that will speed up Outlook. Consider hardware changes only if a separate diagnosis identifies a specific limitation.
