In LiveKit, removing one participant, ending an agent session, disconnecting a client, and deleting a room are separate lifecycle events. Keep them separate in a Python team-presence sidebar: update the roster when a participant leaves, manage agent shutdown intentionally, and delete the room only when the whole room is no longer needed.
1. Distinguish a participant leaving from room teardown
A participant can disconnect while the room and its other participants remain active. LiveKit’s Python Room API documents a participant_disconnected event for that participant-level change. By contrast, the RoomService API says that deleting a room “deletes a room and disconnects all participants.” Those operations have different scopes: one affects a roster entry; the other ends the room for everyone.
For the backend and sidebar, represent participant presence separately from room connection state. Avoid treating one participant’s departure as proof that the room has ended.

2. Update the sidebar from lifecycle events
Use the Room API’s participant and room connection events to drive the corresponding parts of your UI state. When the SDK reports a participant departure, remove that person from the active roster or mark them offline according to your product’s presence rules. Track the room’s connection state independently, so a room disconnect does not get misrepresented as an ordinary individual departure.
This is application design guidance: LiveKit documents the events, but the SDK does not automatically manage your sidebar. A client event also does not by itself guarantee that every remote browser has reconciled its display. Your application needs a state-update and recovery strategy for its own connected users.
3. Choose how the agent session shuts down
LiveKit Agents distinguishes between graceful background shutdown and an awaited close. Choose according to whether pending work should drain and whether the calling coroutine must wait for shutdown to finish.

| Method | Behavior | Use when |
|---|---|---|
shutdown() |
Starts graceful shutdown in the background. | Pending work should be allowed to drain, and the caller need not wait for completion. |
aclose() |
Closes the session immediately and is awaited. | The calling coroutine should wait for the close to finish. |
Do not treat the two methods as interchangeable: their waiting and shutdown behavior differ. Select one deliberately in the session lifecycle rather than relying on a participant disconnect to imply that the agent has ended.
4. Delete the room only when the whole room is no longer needed
After the agent session shuts down, decide whether the room should remain available or be removed. A server-side delete_room operation disconnects all participants, and LiveKit documents a room disconnected event when the room is removed. Use room deletion for whole-room cleanup, not as a substitute for handling an individual participant’s departure.
Before deleting, make sure your application intends to end the room for every participant still connected. If the room should remain available for others, update only the departed participant’s presence instead.

LiveKit’s Python session option delete_room_on_close defaults to False. If enabled, it deletes the room immediately after the session ends. Otherwise, a room may remain after its last participant leaves for the configured departure_timeout. The documented behavior depends on that configuration; there is no single timeout value to assume for every room.
| Cleanup choice | Trigger and timing | Scope |
|---|---|---|
delete_room_on_close=True |
Session end; immediate deletion. | Whole room, disconnecting all participants. |
Retain room with a configured departure_timeout |
Last participant leaves; the room may remain for the configured grace period. | Room retention after the roster becomes empty. |
Handle participant_disconnected |
Participant departure event. | Update that participant’s roster presence; it does not itself mean the room is deleted. |
Use a cleanup policy that matches your product: immediate deletion after session end when the room has no remaining purpose, or a configured grace period when the room may need to persist after its last participant leaves. For a sidebar that reconnects or reloads, reconcile its displayed roster with your application’s current room state rather than assuming one client’s disconnect event updated every viewer.

Interpret disconnect reasons when available
When LiveKit supplies a disconnect reason, use it to distinguish a participant-initiated leave from room deletion or another documented cause. This gives your application more context than a generic “disconnected” label, while the roster and room state should still be modeled separately.
