The LM3914 converts an analog input voltage into a ten-step visual indication: it compares the input against thresholds in an internal divider and activates the corresponding display output. A mode connection selects either one moving dot or a cumulative bar. Texas Instruments now marks the device obsolete, so confirm the part’s status and package before designing around it.
How the LM3914 maps voltage to display steps
The LM3914 is a monolithic integrated circuit designed to sense analog voltage levels and drive ten outputs for a linear display. Inside, an input buffer feeds ten comparators. Those comparators use thresholds established by a precision, ten-step divider, so the display position tracks the input across a configured voltage span.
As the input rises through the thresholds, the indicated step advances. The built-in reference is adjustable; TI lists a reference range of 1.2 V to 12 V. The exact threshold levels and circuit behavior depend on how the reference and divider are configured, so use the datasheet’s application circuits and operating conditions when designing a circuit.

The outputs are current-regulated, which means the basic datasheet application does not need a separate resistor for each LED. That does not remove the need to follow the device’s electrical limits or check the requirements of the chosen display loads.

LM3914 dot mode vs. bar mode
| Mode | What lights | Useful when | Current consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dot | A single position marks the input’s current step. | You want a compact indication of level or position. | Typically fewer outputs are illuminated at once than in bar mode; actual current depends on configuration and display loads. |
| Bar | The current step and all lower steps remain illuminated, creating a filled bar. | You want the amount or level to be legible at a glance. | More outputs can be lit simultaneously as the input rises; actual current depends on configuration and display loads. |
A single mode pin selects dot or bar operation. In dot mode, TI specifies about 1 mV of overlap, or “fade,” between segments to avoid an ambiguous point where all LEDs would be off. At lower full-scale voltages, buffer and comparator offsets can contribute significant error, so do not treat a typical nonlinearity figure as a guaranteed accuracy for every low-voltage circuit.
What else the LM3914 can drive
The datasheet describes LEDs, LCDs, vacuum fluorescent displays and low-current incandescent lamps as possible display loads. It also gives examples of applications including analog meters, visual alarms, displays, controllers, programmers and sequencers.
Rank #2
- Drives LEDs, LCDs or vacuum fluorescents
- Bar or dot display mode externally selectable by user
- Internal voltage reference from 1.2V to 12V
- Output current programmable from 2 mA to 30 mA
- NOTE:Exposure to absolute maximum rating conditions for extended periods may affect device reliability
For larger readouts, multiple drivers can be cascaded. TI describes configurations ranging from 20 to more than 100 segments, as well as a two-driver arrangement for a zero-center meter. These are design possibilities, not plug-in arrangements: consult the datasheet for the required connections and operating conditions.
Supply, package and lifecycle checks
- Operating supply: TI says the device can operate from a single supply below 3 V under the conditions described in the datasheet. That is not a blanket guarantee for every load or circuit.
- Temperature range: TI specifies an operating range of 0°C to +70°C.
- Package option: The datasheet identifies LM3914N-1 in an 18-lead PDIP package.
- Lifecycle: TI’s product page, reviewed October 7, 2026, marks the LM3914 obsolete and says it is no longer in production. The datasheet documents the part and package, but does not establish present-day seller stock or the compatibility of a substitute.
Check the manufacturer’s LM3914 product information and support page for current lifecycle information and consult the LM3914 datasheet (Revision B, March 2013) for circuit design details. Availability can change, and the manufacturer documentation does not confirm a specific seller’s inventory.
