Containers, virtual machines (VMs), and serverless are not three competing ways to package the same thing. They describe different boundaries: a container isolates an application process, a VM runs a whole guest operating system, and serverless lets a provider manage the execution environment for your code. They can also be combined: containers can run inside VMs, and some serverless services accept container images.
What’s the difference in one mental picture?
- VM: A guest computer, including its operating system and kernel.
- Container: An isolated application process and the files it needs, sharing the host’s kernel.
- Serverless function: Code run by a provider-managed service in response to invocations or events.
Docker describes a container as “an isolated process with all of the files it needs to run.” That process is isolated, but it does not bring its own kernel: containers on a host share the host kernel. A VM, by contrast, includes an operating system with its own kernel, drivers, programs, and applications. Docker’s container explanation describes both models and how they can be used together.
Where does each execution boundary sit?
Containers isolate processes
A container packages an application process and the files it needs, then runs it with isolation mechanisms on a host. Because containers share the host kernel, the container boundary is not the same as running a separate guest kernel.

VMs isolate guest operating systems
A VM presents a guest computer with its own operating system and kernel. The guest OS is a distinct layer from the host OS, and applications run within that guest environment.

Serverless delegates environment management
Serverless describes who manages the execution environment, rather than a single packaging format. With AWS Lambda, for example, the service creates an isolated execution environment for function code. AWS documents initialization, invocation, and shutdown phases; an available environment may be reused for another invocation. The documentation does not require a particular underlying kernel model for a general comparison, so it is more accurate to describe Lambda as a managed execution environment than to equate it with either a container or a VM. See AWS’s Lambda execution-environment documentation.
How do the models fit together?
Think in layers rather than choosing one label for an entire system. A cloud machine is often a VM, and that VM can host a container runtime and multiple containerized applications. In that arrangement, the VM supplies the guest operating system boundary while the containers isolate application processes within it. Docker’s explanation describes this combination.

Serverless can use containers too. AWS Lambda allows function code and dependencies to be packaged as a container image, while Lambda remains responsible for the managed execution environment. The image changes how the function is packaged and deployed; it does not make the service operationally identical to running that image on a VM or managing a container host yourself. See AWS’s guide to deploying Lambda functions with container images and its function configuration documentation.

Who manages what?
| Model | What you provide | What the model means for environment management |
|---|---|---|
| Container | An application process and the files it needs, commonly packaged as an image. | You choose and manage the host or platform that runs it; the container shares the host kernel. |
| VM | A guest operating system and the applications that run within it. | The VM provides a guest OS and kernel boundary. You are working with an operating-system environment, not only an application process. |
| Serverless function | Function code or, on AWS Lambda, a container image. | The service manages the execution environment and runs the code for invocations or events. |
This comparison describes the models, not the exact division of responsibility in every product. A platform can take on more or less infrastructure management, so check its documentation when deciding what you must configure and maintain.

How should you choose?
Start with the boundary and operating model you need, not with the assumption that one option is universally better.
- Choose containers as your working model when you want to package an application process and its files while using a host’s kernel. Decide separately where those containers will run and who will manage that host or platform.
- Choose a VM as your working model when the relevant unit is a guest operating system with its own kernel and the applications inside it.
- Consider serverless when you want a provider-managed execution environment for code triggered by invocations or events. Confirm the specific service’s configuration and operational constraints in its current documentation.
Long-running application or service versus event-driven function can be a useful question to ask, but it is not a rule that determines suitability for every product or workload. Nor does this conceptual comparison establish a universal ranking for cost, performance, or security; those depend on the workload, platform, and configuration.

What does container isolation mean for security?
Sharing a kernel does not make containers useless as an isolation boundary, but it does mean that container isolation should not be described as a separate guest kernel. Docker’s security documentation identifies kernel security, the Docker daemon’s attack surface, container configuration, and hardening as relevant concerns. See Docker Engine security.
In practice, assess the actual runtime and deployment configuration rather than treating the word “container” as a complete security guarantee. The same principle applies to VMs and managed services: the model tells you where an important boundary or management responsibility sits, not whether a particular deployment is secure.
