A Google ranking does not guarantee that ChatGPT Search will show your business. The two services have different discovery and access conditions. To diagnose the gap, check whether OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot can reach your site, whether your hosting or security systems block crawlers, and whether your key pages are easy to find and read. These checks can improve eligibility, but they cannot guarantee a mention or citation.

Why a Google ranking does not guarantee a ChatGPT appearance

Google visibility and visibility in ChatGPT Search are separate outcomes. Google’s guidance says its AI Search features continue to rely on established SEO fundamentals, including crawl access and useful, accessible content. OpenAI’s publisher guidance identifies OAI-SearchBot as the crawler to allow when you want content considered for ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. Neither platform promises that an accessible page will be selected or cited.

How to check whether ChatGPT Search can reach your site

1. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot

Review the live robots.txt file at your domain and inspect rules that apply to the pages you want discovered. OpenAI advises publishers to allow OAI-SearchBot if they want content included in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. See OpenAI’s crawler guidance and its ChatGPT Search publisher information.

2. Distinguish OAI-SearchBot from GPTBot

OpenAI describes GPTBot as serving a different purpose from OAI-SearchBot. Check the user-agent rule that applies to the outcome you care about: access for ChatGPT Search discovery is not the same control question as access for other OpenAI purposes. Do not assume that allowing GPTBot also allows OAI-SearchBot, or that you must enable every crawler.

3. Check hosting, CDN, and security behavior

A permissive robots.txt does not prove a crawler can retrieve a page. Hosting providers, CDNs, firewalls, and security services can block or challenge requests. Ask the provider to check whether legitimate crawler requests can reach important pages and receive the page content rather than an access challenge. This is a check of accessibility, not evidence that ChatGPT has selected or cited the page.

4. Check Google’s crawl and rendered page

Verify your site in Google Search Console and use URL Inspection to review Google’s indexing status and the HTML Googlebot received. This can help uncover Google-side indexing or rendering problems, but a Google result does not certify that a different crawler can access the same page.

Make important business information easy to find

  • Link internally to important pages, such as your services, locations, and contact information.
  • Make key information available as readable text rather than relying only on images or other formats that may be difficult to access.
  • Keep structured data consistent with what visitors can see on the page.

Google says existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant to its AI features. It does not require special schema.org structured data for those features and advises against unnecessary AI text files or inauthentic mentions. Focus on accessible pages and useful, clearly presented information rather than a supposed GEO trick that promises to make an AI answer name your company. Fix the specific barrier, then verify the change

  1. Identify the affected page and the layer that is blocking it: robots.txt, hosting or security infrastructure, or the page itself.
  2. Ask the responsible site administrator or provider to correct that specific issue.
  3. Recheck the page and access rules after the change. For Google-side rendering or indexing, use URL Inspection in Search Console.

There is no source-backed timetable for a ChatGPT appearance after a fix, and resolving an access problem does not guarantee an immediate citation or business recommendation.

A separate consideration: links to pages you do not want surfaced

OpenAI says ChatGPT Atlas may surface a disallowed page’s link and title if it obtains the URL from a third-party search provider or another page and has signals that the page is relevant. OpenAI says publishers who do not want this should use a noindex meta tag, and the crawler must be able to read the page to see that tag. This is a separate control consideration, not a tactic for improving visibility. Consult OpenAI’s crawler documentation for the relevant details.
