To install Magento Open Source on Ubuntu, first select a release and match Ubuntu, PHP, Composer, the database, and search service to Adobe’s compatibility table. Then prepare the server, authenticate Composer to Adobe’s repository, create the project, set filesystem permissions, and run Magento’s command-line installer. The commands and versions are not universal: use the requirements for the exact release you intend to install.
Choose a Magento release before configuring Ubuntu
Start with Adobe’s system requirements. Adobe supports only the software combinations listed for each release; an unlisted combination is not validated or supported. The table includes Linux x86-64 distributions such as Ubuntu, but that does not mean every Ubuntu and dependency version works with every Magento release.
For example, Adobe’s requirements table, checked in October 2026, lists Magento/Commerce 2.4.9 with PHP 8.5 and Composer 2.10; its row also lists OpenSearch 3 and recommends MariaDB 12.3, with MariaDB 11.8 also listed. Treat those as values for that release row, not as requirements for older versions or other deployment modes. Check Adobe’s current table again when choosing the release because supported combinations can change.
Prepare the Ubuntu server and services
Adobe’s prerequisites guidance directs Ubuntu operators to update packages and verify the web server, PHP, and compatible database version. The on-premises setup also requires a search service and other dependencies appropriate to the chosen release. Use Adobe’s on-premises installation overview to plan the sequence: configure the stack, obtain the application with Composer, and install it.

Before proceeding, decide whether you are building a development/test environment or a production store, and whether you will maintain the Ubuntu operating system and services yourself. A self-managed installation requires access to the server, Composer repository credentials, and control of the filesystem owner. If you do not have infrastructure or want another party to maintain it, consider managed hosting; confirm that its Magento release and dependency stack match Adobe’s supported combinations.
Install PHP and verify Magento’s extensions
Install the PHP version supported by your selected release, using packages appropriate to that PHP version and Ubuntu version. Magento Open Source needs more than PHP itself: Adobe’s PHP settings and prerequisites list includes bcmath, curl, gd, intl, mbstring, pdo_mysql, soap, sockets, sodium, xmlwriter, xsl, and zip. Check the complete current list rather than relying on this selection alone, and review the documented PHP configuration and timezone settings.
Do not copy a package-install command written for a different Ubuntu or PHP release. Package names and availability depend on the chosen versions; after installing PHP and extensions, confirm that the command-line PHP environment used by Composer and Magento has the required version and modules.

Install Composer and configure repository access
Magento Open Source is obtained through Composer. Adobe’s Composer installation guide lists Composer and Adobe repository authentication keys as prerequisites. When Composer prompts for credentials, enter the public key as the username and the private key as the password.
Protect the private key: do not commit it to source control or expose it in public shell history. Use the key management approach appropriate to your server and team.
Create the Magento project
Run Composer from the intended application location as the filesystem owner—not as root. Replace <install-directory-name> with the directory name you actually want:

composer create-project --repository-url=https://repo.magento.com/ magento/project-community-edition <install-directory-name>The project package is magento/project-community-edition. Composer will request repository credentials if they have not already been configured. Allow the command to finish before changing ownership or permissions.

Set ownership and permissions for the web server
Magento CLI commands should run as the filesystem owner, and Adobe says not to install the application as root. In Adobe’s Ubuntu example, the web-server group is www-data; the web-server group is granted write access to the relevant application directories, and bin/magento is made executable. Follow Adobe’s current filesystem ownership and permissions guidance for the actual paths and commands in your deployment rather than applying broad write permissions to the entire server or application.
Run the command-line installer
From the Magento project directory, run bin/magento setup:install as the filesystem owner. Supply the actual base URL, database connection details, administrator account, and other options required for your environment. Adobe’s Composer quick-start includes example values to illustrate the command; they are not production credentials. Use unique, strong administrator and database credentials, and configure the real hostname and database rather than copying sample values.

Adobe’s installation documentation requires command-line installation for the documented on-premises workflow. The exact installer options depend on the chosen release and deployment, so consult the current Composer quick-start before executing the command.
Verify the installation and plan operations
After the installer completes, check that the storefront and administrator interface load at the configured addresses. Also confirm that scheduled tasks are configured and running, and address HTTPS and production security using Adobe’s current operational guidance. Completing the Composer install and setup command alone does not establish that a store is production-ready; ongoing patching and service maintenance remain part of operating a self-hosted deployment.
