Amazon Blink is a family of smart home security cameras and video doorbells controlled through the Blink app—not one specific camera. Depending on the model, Blink devices can provide live view, motion notifications, night vision, and two-way audio. Live view and motion notifications are available without a paid plan; cloud video storage and some additional features depend on the device, plan, and country.
What is Blink?
Blink is Amazon’s smart home security product family. Its lineup includes indoor and outdoor cameras, Mini cameras, floodlight cameras, and video doorbells. You use the Blink Home Monitor app to view compatible cameras and manage a system. Features differ by model, so check the specific device for power type, placement suitability, audio features, and storage compatibility.
Blink says its cameras can monitor areas inside or outside a property up to 20 feet. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent performance measurement. Blink also cautions that battery-powered cameras are not designed to provide continuous CCTV feeds or serve as baby monitors. A Blink system is one or more cameras that can be armed or disarmed together. Blink says a system can include up to ten cameras and one Sync Module; one account can contain multiple systems. Whether you need a Sync Module depends on the device: battery-powered cameras require one, while wired floodlight cameras, Mini cameras, video doorbells, and Sync Modules can create their own systems.

For setup and management, Blink currently lists an account, a valid email address, the current Blink app, a supported phone or tablet, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with a minimum of 2 Mbps per device. Its listed minimum operating systems are iOS 15, Android 9, or Fire OS 7, depending on the device. These requirements can change; check Blink’s setup and system FAQ before buying or installing.
Do Blink cameras need a subscription?
No paid plan is required for basic live view or motion-activated notifications. A plan may add cloud clip storage, live-view recording, smart detection, or AI features, but availability depends on the camera, plan, and region. Check the current plan terms for the exact model and country rather than assuming every feature applies to every Blink device.

Blink’s support pages describe cloud storage periods of up to 60 days in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, and 30 days in other regions. Its listed AI features are available in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom, with an Illinois exclusion. These regional terms and eligible features may change. For eligible devices, a Sync Module 2 can save motion clips to a compatible USB drive. This is local storage, separate from cloud storage. If you have a plan or trial, Clip Backup can also copy cloud clips to USB once every 24 hours. Confirm that your specific camera supports the storage option you want; the Sync Module 2 and USB setup is not universal across the product family. Does Blink work with Alexa?
Selected compatible Echo, Fire TV, and Fire Tablet devices can show Blink live views. Supported Alexa functions may also include arming or disarming a system by voice, motion and doorbell-press announcements, and routines. Voice disarming requires an Alexa Voice Code. - Placement: Choose an indoor or outdoor model appropriate for the intended location.
- Power and system hardware: Compare battery and wired options, and confirm whether the camera requires a Sync Module.
- Functions: Check whether the specific model has the two-way audio, doorbell, or floodlight features you want.
- Storage: Confirm whether the model supports USB storage, cloud recording, or both, and whether a plan is needed for the features you want.
- Connectivity: Check 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi coverage at the installation point and verify that your phone or tablet meets Blink’s current app requirements.
Linking a Blink account to an Amazon account is generally voluntary, but Blink says it is required to activate plans purchased on Amazon and receive eligible subscriber hardware discounts. Details are in Blink’s account-linking instructions.
