To detect where a Polymarket TWAP market is in its lifecycle, combine its Gamma metadata with current CLOB order-book observations and, when needed, separate trading or on-chain evidence. Treat the scheduled end as an observation-boundary clue—not proof that orders have stopped or that the result is final. The lifecycle labels below are an engineering model, not a documented set of official Polymarket states.
Which signals distinguish the lifecycle stages?
Polymarket exposes discovery and market metadata through Gamma, while its CLOB API provides order-book and price observations. These are different data surfaces. Track their values independently so a system can represent delayed updates or conflicting evidence instead of assuming every signal changes at once. The documentation reviewed does not specify universal synchronization or consistency guarantees between these sources.

Polymarket’s market-data guide describes Gamma, CLOB, the Data API, and a subgraph as distinct sources for these purposes. Preserve the source values and the time each observation was received; do not collapse them into one field such as is_active without retaining the underlying evidence.
How to model the lifecycle in software
A practical state machine can use the following internal labels. They are useful for application logic, but should not be presented as Polymarket’s canonical lifecycle enum.

- Discovered: Gamma returned the market and its identifiers and available status fields.
- Active: Metadata and current CLOB observations support treating the market as open for trading. Record the evidence rather than assuming a single metadata flag proves orderability.
- Approaching boundary: The scheduled observation boundary is near. Continue checking the live book and market-specific rules; the time alone does not indicate closure.
- Closed to new orders: Current evidence indicates that new orders are no longer accepted. Keep this distinct from the result being resolved.
- Awaiting or undergoing resolution: The observation window has passed or the market is otherwise closed, but final outcome evidence is not yet established.
- Resolved: A reliable resolution signal establishes the outcome. Do not infer this solely from a closed flag, elapsed time, or a stale price.
For every transition, store the source, raw value, observation time, and any conflicting signal. If Gamma says closed while a current CLOB observation appears available—or if metadata and book availability otherwise disagree—represent the disagreement and recheck rather than silently forcing a final state. The available documentation does not settle every such edge case.
What to read from each Polymarket data source
Gamma: discovery and market metadata
Use Gamma to discover events and markets, search, and retrieve market metadata. Its guide shows filtering with active=true and closed=false, lookup by event or market slug, sorting, and pagination. Retain the market ID, slug, condition identifier, outcome token identifiers, and available status fields so later observations can be tied to the right market and outcomes.

CLOB: current book and price observations
Use the CLOB API for read access to order books and observations such as prices, midpoint, spread, last trade price, and price history. The documented enableOrderBook field describes whether the order book is active. Treat it as a useful signal, not a complete lifecycle verdict; check current book availability or orderability where available instead of deriving it from the scheduled end time.

Data API and subgraph: supplemental evidence
The Data API covers trades, positions, and user data. The subgraph supports on-chain queries including positions, orders, trade events, redemptions, and open interest. These sources can add trading or settlement context when market metadata and current book observations are not enough, but keep their evidence separate from Gamma and CLOB observations.

How the TWAP observation window affects boundary detection
A community post presented as a Polymarket announcement says crypto up/down markets would move from a single snapshot price to TWAP-based resolution, with observation windows scaled to market duration. It lists 30 seconds for 5-minute markets, 60 seconds for 15-minute markets, and 60 seconds for 4-hour markets. It also names Chainlink Data Streams and Polymarket’s public Real-Time Data Streaming WebSocket as ways developers can consume TWAP prices.
These figures and feed references are claims in that community-posted announcement, not a universal rule for every market or independently verified guarantee of current feed behavior. Check the specific market’s current rules and the relevant official feed specifications before using a window or feed in production. Do not assume a market’s observation boundary is identical to its order cutoff or its final resolution time.
