Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making useful, eligible pages easier for answer engines to find, understand and cite. There is no universal GEO ranking formula, and allowing a crawler or meeting a platform’s technical requirements does not guarantee a citation. The practical starting point is strong, original content and sound technical SEO, followed by platform-specific access checks and measurement.
What is GEO, and what can it actually do?
GEO is an umbrella term for improving the chance that a page will be visible in responses from generative search experiences. It is not a shared standard used by every platform, nor a switch that makes a site appear in answers. Each platform has its own systems for finding and selecting sources, and publishers do not control when a page is cited.
The foundational GEO paper introduced a benchmark for studying visibility in generative-engine responses. Aggarwal and coauthors reported an increase of up to 40% under the paper’s experimental setup. That is an upper result in the study’s benchmark, not a typical uplift, a result for every site, or a forecast for current ChatGPT or Perplexity answers. The authors also noted that strategies’ effectiveness varied across domains and described generative systems as black boxes that leave creators with limited control over whether and how their content appears. Read the GEO paper on arXiv.
How do I get cited by ChatGPT?
OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search. For a site’s content to be included in ChatGPT summaries and snippets, its publisher guidance says not to block OAI-SearchBot. This makes crawl access a practical eligibility check—not a guarantee of inclusion or a way to dictate which page an answer cites. OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ describes the current publisher guidance.
#1 Best Overall
Keep Search access separate from the training choice
Do not treat OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot as interchangeable. In the FAQ, OpenAI associates OAI-SearchBot with discovery for ChatGPT Search and GPTBot with potential training use. A publisher can make a training-related access decision about GPTBot separately from whether public pages should be retrievable for Search. Review the intended behavior in the FAQ and your access controls before changing robots.txt.
Make the page useful as a source
Access alone does not make a page worth citing. Publish material that answers a specific reader question, explains its reasoning, and adds original, reliable detail. Use clear headings and a logical structure so readers—and systems retrieving relevant passages—can understand what each section establishes. These are sound publishing practices, not a documented OpenAI formatting formula or a promise of citation.

How should I optimize for Google’s generative AI features?
Google treats generative AI visibility as part of Google Search, not as a separate optimization system with special markup. Its Search Central guide, last updated 2026-07-10 UTC, says generative features are grounded in core Search ranking and quality systems. Google describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, in which related queries may be generated to gather relevant information. For site owners, the guidance is to keep conventional SEO foundations in place and create unique, useful pages for people. Read Google’s guide to generative AI features in Search.

- Make important pages crawlable and check that access controls do not unintentionally prevent discovery.
- Use a clear technical structure and provide a useful page experience.
- Publish original, people-first information rather than rewriting existing material to imitate an answer-engine style.
Google cautions that technical compliance is not a guarantee: “Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.”

Do not mistake optional tactics for Google requirements
Google says publishers do not need llms.txt, special AI markup, tiny “chunks,” or a special generative-AI rewrite to be eligible for its generative features. Structured data is not required for those features, although it may still serve other SEO or rich-result purposes. Google also advises against adding inauthentic mentions. Its guidance emphasizes usefulness over formatting tricks: “Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website’s presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide.”
How do I optimize my site for Perplexity?
Start with the same editorial foundation: publish helpful, original pages and keep normal technical discovery in order. But do not assume that Google’s or OpenAI’s crawler rules apply to Perplexity. The relevant official reference is Perplexity’s Perplexity Crawlers documentation. Its current crawler identities, access rules and reporting options should be checked there before making a Perplexity-specific change to robots.txt or other controls.
Rank #4
A general GEO checklist cannot establish which Perplexity crawler does what, whether a given access rule applies to discovery or another use, or what reporting the platform currently provides. Verify those details against the official documentation rather than copying a rule from another answer engine.
What should I check before changing crawler access?
- List the pages you intend to make public. Confirm which sections are meant to be discoverable and which should remain restricted.
- Check the platform’s current official instructions. For ChatGPT Search, distinguish
OAI-SearchBotfromGPTBot. For Perplexity, verify the current crawler documentation rather than inferring its rules from another platform. - Review every access layer. Check
robots.txtas well as any other controls that could prevent a public page from being retrieved. A robots.txt allowance alone is not evidence that a page will be indexed or cited. - Recheck after changes. Crawler names, search experiences and platform guidance can change, so revisit the official instructions when you revise access rules.
How can I measure AI search visibility?
Use platform-specific observations and keep their limits in mind. Google directs site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console for measurement. OpenAI says ChatGPT referrals include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can be used to identify referral visits in web analytics. These are different signals: referral visits show traffic that arrived from ChatGPT, not every citation or appearance, and neither source promises a complete cross-platform citation report.
Best Value
There is no current cross-platform citation-rate benchmark, typical GEO lift or conversion figure established by the cited sources. The GEO paper’s “up to 40%” result belongs to its own benchmark experiment; it cannot serve as a forecast for a particular publisher. Track the signals available to you over time, and do not treat traffic alone as a complete measure of citation exposure.
Quick Recap
A practical GEO workflow for developers and site owners
- Choose a reader question worth answering. Build the page around a clear need, and add original details and reliable sourcing that make it useful beyond a generic summary.
- Make the answer easy to navigate. Organize related information under descriptive headings and keep the main content legible and technically accessible.
- Apply standard SEO checks. Confirm that important pages can be crawled and that the site’s technical structure and page experience are sound.
- Check access by platform and purpose. For ChatGPT Search, review access for
OAI-SearchBotseparately from any decision aboutGPTBot. Check Perplexity’s official crawler instructions before implementing its rules. Do not addllms.txtor special AI markup on the assumption that Google requires it. - Measure what each platform exposes. Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report for Google and the stated ChatGPT referral parameter in analytics. Interpret each as a partial, platform-specific signal.
- Revisit the guidance and the page. Keep content useful and current, and verify platform instructions again when crawler controls or reporting matter to your implementation.
