To play phone audio through an old stereo, connect a Bluetooth audio receiver to a suitable line-level input such as AUX, then pair the phone with the receiver. The receiver takes audio from the phone; the stereo remains responsible for source selection, volume, amplification and speakers. Choose a Bluetooth receiver—not a transmitter-only adapter—and check the stereo and adapter manuals to confirm that their input and output connections match.

What you need for a phone-to-stereo Bluetooth connection

The basic signal path is: phone → Bluetooth receiver set to receive audio → compatible stereo input → amplifier → existing speakers. A Bluetooth receiver with an output compatible with your stereo is the essential accessory. A transmitter serves the opposite purpose: sending audio from a stereo or other source to Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Some adapters offer both functions, so check that the unit is set to receiver mode.

A receiver is not a speaker amplifier. Connect its audio output to an appropriate input on the stereo, not to speaker terminals. Check how the receiver is powered as well: requirements vary by model. For example, the Somogyi BTRC 1000 manual describes USB-C power and analog 3.5 mm or optical audio output; those details apply to that product, not to every Bluetooth receiver.

Which input on an old stereo should you use?

Use an input identified for line-level audio

Look for AUX or another input that the stereo’s manual identifies as suitable for an audio source. Labels and jack types vary, so RCA connectors alone do not establish that an input is right. For instance, the Cambridge Audio AXR85/100 manual identifies A1–A3 as inputs for line-level equipment. Check your own model’s documentation rather than assuming that its labels or layout match.

Do not use PHONO for a standard Bluetooth receiver

PHONO is intended for turntable-level signals and may pass through a built-in phono stage. A standard Bluetooth receiver produces line-level audio, so connecting it to PHONO can produce incorrect sound. Cambridge Audio’s AXR85/100 manual states, “Do not connect a non-phono source to the phono input.” Treat that warning as specific guidance from that manual, and consult the manual for your stereo if its input labels are unfamiliar.

If the stereo appears to have only a PHONO input or has unfamiliar sockets, identify the exact model and its signal path before buying anything. There is no universal fix established for every vintage component or DIN-only arrangement; a system-specific converter, preamplifier or technician’s advice may be needed.

How to connect and pair the Bluetooth receiver

  1. Check the stereo’s manual and rear panel. Identify an available input documented for line-level audio. Confirm that it is an input, not an output, and do not assume that an RCA socket is suitable based on its shape alone.
  2. Choose a receiver and check its outputs. For phone-to-stereo playback, use a Bluetooth audio receiver or a dual-mode adapter set to receiver mode. Compare its audio output with the stereo input. Depending on the devices, the connection may use RCA, 3.5 mm analog, or optical audio. The Philips connection instructions show RCA wiring and phone pairing, while the Somogyi manual describes analog and optical outputs. Check both manuals before selecting a cable or adapter.
  3. Connect the audio cable. Run the receiver’s audio output to the stereo’s suitable input. For the RCA connection shown in Philips’ instructions, match red to red and white to white.
  4. Power the receiver as directed. Use the supply specified in that receiver’s manual; do not assume that all models use the same type of power connection.
  5. Select the input and pair the phone. Put the receiver into pairing mode, then select it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings according to the receiver’s instructions. Select the corresponding input on the stereo and start at a low listening volume. The exact pairing and source-selection controls differ by model.

What to check before buying a receiver or cable

  • Adapter role: It must receive audio from the phone. If the unit is dual-mode, confirm how to switch it to receiver mode.
  • Audio connectors: Match the receiver’s output to a supported stereo input. A 3.5 mm output, RCA connection or optical output is useful only if it can connect appropriately to the stereo.
  • Stereo input type: Confirm in the manual that the selected input accepts line-level audio; do not substitute PHONO.
  • Power: Check the receiver’s stated power requirements and whether you have a suitable supply.
  • Video use: If you plan to watch video, check the relevant manuals for audio/video latency information. The Somogyi manual recommends low-latency Bluetooth devices for its TV use case, but that is not a universal performance guarantee.
  • Bluetooth features: The available setup guidance does not establish a preferred codec for this general connection. Verify both endpoints’ specifications rather than assuming that a Bluetooth version or advertised codec guarantees a particular pairing or audible improvement.

Troubleshoot common connection problems

No sound

Confirm that the stereo is set to the input where the receiver is connected, the phone is paired to the receiver, and both devices are powered. Cambridge Audio’s AXR85/100 manual includes correct source selection and pairing state among its checks; follow the instructions for your own equipment.

Distorted sound

Check that the receiver is not connected to PHONO as though it were a line-level input. A phono stage is intended for turntable-level signals, not standard Bluetooth receiver output.

Only one channel plays, or left and right seem reversed

Check that the left and right plugs align with the intended connectors. For the RCA connection in Philips’ instructions, red goes to red and white to white.

Hum or noise

Make sure the connections are secure and consult the stereo’s manual for cable and grounding guidance. Cambridge Audio’s receiver troubleshooting covers secure cable and ground or shield connections, but its turntable-grounding advice is specific to that equipment and should not be assumed to apply to every Bluetooth setup.
