If a device using a static IP address has no internet, check whether the problem affects just that device, then verify its IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS settings. On Windows, ipconfig /all shows the active adapter’s configuration. A wrong value or an address that conflicts with the router’s DHCP pool can interrupt connectivity; if the device does not need a manually assigned address, switching it to Automatic (DHCP) is usually the simplest fix.
First determine whether the problem is the device or the network
Check another device on the same network. If other devices also cannot connect, the issue may be with the router, access point, or upstream internet connection rather than the static settings on one device. If only one device is affected, focus on its network adapter and address configuration.
On a Windows device, also compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, investigate the wireless connection; if neither works on that device while other devices connect, its configuration is a stronger suspect. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends using another device and an Ethernet connection to help isolate the cause.
Inspect the static IP settings in Windows
A manual configuration must match the network you are currently using. It normally includes an IP address, subnet mask or prefix length, default gateway, and DNS server addresses. Values that work on one network may be invalid on another, so do not copy example addresses from elsewhere.

- Open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /all. - Find the adapter in use—typically the Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter—and note its IPv4 address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers, and connection-specific DNS suffix.
- Compare those values with the settings provided for this network by its administrator or router configuration. Check that the address belongs to the correct local subnet and that the gateway and DNS servers are valid for this network.
Microsoft’s Windows network settings guide describes where IP assignment is configured. In Windows, go to Settings > Network & internet, select the active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), and find IP assignment. The available details and labels can vary with the Windows version and connection type.
Check for a static IP address conflict
A device’s manually assigned address can collide with an address that the router or DHCP server gives to another device. This can make connections unreliable or prevent devices from communicating properly. The risk is especially relevant when the static address falls within the server’s dynamic allocation pool.

Microsoft documents two remedies: use DHCP on the manually configured device, or have the network administrator exclude the static address from the DHCP scope. For a home network, changing the affected device back to DHCP is often the simpler option. If the device must retain a stable local address, use a supported router reservation or an address that the administrator has kept outside the dynamic pool. The correct method depends on the router or DHCP server; do not assume an address is safe merely because it is not currently in use. See Microsoft’s duplicate IP address conflict guidance and DHCP server troubleshooting guidance.
Separate gateway problems from DNS problems
The default gateway routes traffic from the local network to other networks, including the internet. DNS servers translate website names into IP addresses. A wrong gateway can prevent broader network access; incorrect DNS can make sites fail to open by name even when some network connectivity remains.

- Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.
- If the gateway is unreachable: check that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi or Ethernet network, that its IP address and subnet are appropriate for that network, and that no duplicate address is present.
- If access by IP appears to work but websites fail by name: check the DNS server values shown by
ipconfig /alland confirm they are correct for the network.
You can test a DNS server’s IP address with a connectivity test such as ping, but a failed ping is not conclusive: the server or network may block ICMP traffic. Microsoft’s Windows network connection troubleshooting guidance describes checking network details and testing connectivity.
Switch to DHCP or correct the manual configuration
Use Automatic (DHCP) if a fixed address is not required
In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet, select the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, choose IP assignment > Edit, and select Automatic (DHCP). Save the change. Microsoft recommends DHCP for typical Windows configurations; the router or access point supplies IP and DNS settings automatically.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
If the connection was already configured for DHCP, ipconfig /renew can request a renewed lease. That command applies to dynamically configured clients, not a manually assigned static address.
Keep a manual address only when the network supports it
If the device genuinely needs a stable local address, get the correct address, subnet, gateway, and DNS values from the network administrator or the router’s supported configuration. Confirm that the address will not conflict with the DHCP pool, then enter the values under the connection’s IP assignment settings. A reservation or an administrator-managed exclusion can help coordinate stable addressing with DHCP, but which option is available depends on the network equipment.

Retest in a useful order
- Reconnect to the network after saving the corrected settings. For a DHCP client, renew its lease if needed with
ipconfig /renew. - Check whether the device can reach the local gateway. If it cannot, revisit the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, subnet and address values, and possible IP conflicts.
- Try a known internet destination. If network access works by IP but not by hostname, review DNS settings; do not treat a failed ping alone as proof that a DNS server is down.
- If every device is affected, investigate the router, access point, or internet service. If the network is managed, contact its administrator rather than changing the DHCP scope yourself.
On a managed network, the administrator may need to check DHCP scope capacity, server configuration, or whether static devices are excluded from the pool. These settings are network-specific.
Quick Recap
When to choose DHCP versus a static address
| Consideration | Automatic (DHCP) | Manual static address |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Typical Windows use when the device does not require a fixed local address; Microsoft recommends this mode. | A device or network that specifically requires a stable local address and has an addressing plan to support it. |
| How settings are supplied | The router or access point supplies IP and DNS settings automatically. | You enter the address and related network values yourself or use a supported reservation. |
| Main conflict risk | The DHCP server manages assignments, though server or network problems can still affect connectivity. | The chosen address may overlap with the DHCP pool or another device’s address unless coordinated. |
| What must be correct | The device must connect to the intended network and obtain a valid lease. | The IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS must all be valid for the current network, and the address must not conflict. |
