A slow Windows startup can come from apps that launch at sign-in, a software conflict, an update-related problem, or aging hardware. Start by identifying whether the delay happens before or after sign-in, then test one change at a time. There is no guaranteed number of seconds any fix will save on a particular PC.

First, pinpoint where the delay happens

Note whether Windows takes a long time to reach the sign-in screen or whether the delay occurs after you enter your credentials. Those stages point to different next steps: startup apps are worth checking when the desktop is slow to become usable, while a delay before sign-in may call for diagnosis rather than simply disabling apps.

For a useful comparison, time the same part of startup under consistent conditions, using the same shutdown or restart method each time. Make one change, then compare again. This is a practical way to see whether a change helps your PC, not a Microsoft benchmark.

Which startup apps can you disable?

Windows lets you review apps that run when you sign in. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then select Startup apps. You can also go to Settings > Apps > Startup. Microsoft notes that apps running at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage.

Task Manager assigns startup-impact categories based on an app’s CPU and disk use. Microsoft Support defines them as follows:

  • Low Impact: total CPU usage under 300 milliseconds and disk usage under 292 kilobytes.
  • Medium Impact: CPU usage under 1 second but above 300 milliseconds, or disk usage under 3 megabytes but above 292 kilobytes.
  • High Impact: CPU usage above 1 second or disk usage above 3 megabytes.

These are Windows classification thresholds, not estimates of how many seconds you will save. Review what each app does before disabling it. Turn off only apps you do not need at sign-in; do not indiscriminately disable services or security software. If an app is needed, you can re-enable it from the same startup list.

Check Windows updates and basic performance factors

Microsoft recommends installing Windows updates and checking for optional driver updates as part of broader PC performance troubleshooting. Updates may require a restart, but they are not a guaranteed fix for slow startup. Limited storage, outdated software, background apps, and malware are also possible contributors to overall PC performance; their presence alone does not establish the cause of a particular boot delay.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after this date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, and recommends moving to Windows 11. Check Microsoft’s current lifecycle guidance if you are deciding what to do with a Windows 10 PC.

Use a clean boot to check for software conflicts

A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of services and startup items so you can check whether a background app or service is involved. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent startup configuration, and some functionality may be temporarily unavailable while it is active.

  1. Open System Configuration by searching Windows for System Configuration.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining services.
  3. Open Task Manager and disable startup items there.
  4. Restart and check whether the startup delay changes.
  5. If it does, re-enable items systematically, checking in groups to narrow down the conflict.
  6. Restore normal startup when you finish testing.

Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for the full procedure and normal-startup recovery steps.

When should you use Safe Mode or boot logging?

Use these options when ordinary checks have not explained the delay and you are comfortable with Windows diagnostics. They can help narrow the problem, but neither automatically identifies a specific faulty app.

  • Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If the issue does not occur there, that helps narrow possible causes.
  • Boot logging creates a file named ntbtlog.txt listing drivers installed during startup. It is intended for more advanced diagnosis.

To reach Windows startup options, use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Available options can vary by Windows version. On an encrypted device, Windows may ask for the BitLocker recovery key to access recovery tools.

When is Startup Repair or update removal appropriate?

Startup Repair is designed for certain problems that prevent Windows from starting, including some damaged system files or boot-configuration problems. It is not a routine way to speed up a PC that boots successfully but slowly. You can find it in Windows Recovery Environment under Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

USB Boot Drive for Windows Vista | Install & Reinstall with Ease
  • Preloaded with Windows Vista Installer: Includes the official installer for a smooth and reliable installation or restoration process.
  • Supports All Editions: Compatible with Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate (does NOT come with key. It requires your valid product key).
  • Plug-and-Play Convenience: Install directly from the USB drive without the need for original disks.
  • High-Quality USB Drive: Durable, fast, and built for reliable performance.

If the slowdown began after a particular Windows update, Microsoft lists uninstalling that update as a possible recovery action. Use the recovery options for your Windows version, and be prepared to provide the BitLocker recovery key on an encrypted device. See Microsoft’s recovery options guidance before proceeding.

Does an SSD make Windows boot faster?

An SSD may be worth considering only if evidence points to an old or constrained drive and your PC supports a compatible replacement. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from software steps, making an upgrade a possible long-term option. The cited Microsoft guidance does not specifically recommend an SSD or quantify boot-time savings.

Before buying a drive, check your exact PC or motherboard documentation for supported drive type, interface, and physical form factor. A drive that cannot be installed or supported by your system will not solve the problem. If the hardware is not implicated, try the software diagnosis first.

Choose the next step based on what you observe

  • Long delay after sign-in, with optional apps launching: review startup impact and disable only apps you do not need at sign-in.
  • Delay began after an app or service change: test with a clean boot, then re-enable items systematically.
  • Delay began after a Windows update: consider Microsoft’s update-removal recovery option.
  • Windows has trouble starting at all: use recovery diagnostics such as Startup Repair for the failures it is designed to address.
  • Software checks do not help and hardware is demonstrably constrained: verify upgrade compatibility before considering a replacement.

For future recovery needs, Microsoft recommends creating a Windows recovery drive. A USB flash drive used for that purpose is preparation, not a startup-speed fix.
