You cannot safely connect a pump based only on the phrase “tach cable.” It may refer to a mechanical tachometer drive, an electronic tach signal, or a tach generator, and those are different circuits. Identify the exact vehicle or machine, controller, and pump first; then follow the matching manufacturer wiring diagram. Never guess a pump power connection from the word “tach.”
What “tach cable” can mean
A tachometer indicates rotational speed, but the hardware carrying that information varies by system. A “tach cable” could describe a mechanical drive, an electronic signal wire, or a tach generator output. None of those terms, on its own, identifies a pump power connection.
- Mechanical drive: A shaft or cable transmits rotation to a mechanical tachometer. It is not automatically an electrical pump-control wire.
- Electronic tach signal: A controller or ignition system sends a speed signal to a tachometer input. Its voltage and signal format depend on the equipment.
- Tach generator or tracking signal: Some industrial systems use a generator or DC signal to track motor or pump speed. That is a system-specific control input, not a universal fuel-pump connection.
The phrase appears in some online guidance, but without a named machine, wiring diagram, or connector identification, it does not establish that the pump should connect to a tach cable.
How the pump and tach circuits differ
The AMP EFI MS3Pro manual illustrates why these circuits should not be conflated. In that controller, the fuel-pump output is a low-side driver rated for a maximum of 3 A. The manual says to use it to operate a separate relay and explicitly says, “Do not wire the fuel pump directly to the MS3Pro.” The manual discusses the tach output separately: it is a 0–12 V square wave intended for the tach signal wire. The tach-output instruction does not describe a pump connection.

- Triple Fan Connection Solution: The 4 pin fan splitter cable connects up to 3 computer case fans to a single motherboard fan header. This PWM splitter cable lets you add an additional fan to improve airflow inside your PC. A fan speed label on the 4 pin master connector of the fan header splitter is wired to receive the PWM control signal and distribute it to all slave fans for synchronized cooling.
- Unified PWM Control: The 3 way fan splitter (also known as a motherboard fan splitter, CPU fan splitter, or PC fan splitter 4 pin) connects to a 4-pin motherboard header and splits the signal across 3 PWM fans. Control fan speed uniformly through motherboard software for efficient, balanced cooling performance.
- Synchronized Speed Management: The 4pin fan splitter features one 4-pin connector that sends the RPM signal back to the motherboard to synchronize fan speed across the other two fans. The 3 pin fan splitter omits the RPM signal pin, allowing all connected fans to run in tandem when supported by your system—perfect for setups where you need to daisy chain PC fans for optimized airflow.
- Spare Cable Convenience Pack: This cost-effective 2-pack of computer fan splitter 4 pin cables includes a spare for future upgrades or extra fans. Each sleeved and wrapped black 12-inch case fan splitter cable provides a clean, professional look inside an open PC case and helps organize your cable management.
- Wide Compatibility for Enhanced Cooling: Compatible with both 3-pin and 4-pin fans, this PWM fan splitter cable works with popular models such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 120mm, Cooler Master MegaFlow 200mm, and other large 230mm case fans. Easily expand your system’s cooling capacity with this reliable PWM fan splitter cable.
These details apply only to the MS3Pro manual, not to every ECU or pump. Do not use its rating or wiring arrangement as a substitute for the documentation for your equipment. What to identify before wiring
Before making a connection, establish the system identity and obtain its official wiring diagram. Record:

- Length 240mm, pack of two computer fan splitter cables
- One-to-two PWM fan splitter
- Beautiful all black sleeved cable
- Supports 2 PWM fans from a single motherboard PWM header
- Compatible with 4pin PMW fan connector and 3pin fan connector
- Vehicle or machine make, model, and year; for a vehicle, also identify the engine.
- Pump make and model, including its specified voltage and current requirements.
- Controller or ECU make and model, plus the documented fuel-pump output type and rating.
- The cable or connector in question, using a clear photo or the equipment’s wiring diagram to identify it.
- Manufacturer requirements for relay, fuse, wire, and connector selection.
Do not infer wire colors, relay terminals, fuse sizes, or a connection point from the MS3Pro example or from the term “tach.” If the system or wiring cannot be positively identified, stop and consult a qualified technician.

Automotive ECU-controlled electric pumps
Some ECU-controlled pump systems use a low-current ECU output to switch a relay, while the relay switches the pump’s higher current. Whether that architecture applies, and what components are required, depends on the exact controller and pump documentation. A generic relay-and-fuse kit is only appropriate if the manufacturer’s instructions call for a separate relay and its ratings and connections suit the actual load.

- Dual Fan Connection: This PC fan splitter Y cable connects 2 computer case fans to a single motherboard fan header. This 1 to 2 case fan splitter is ideal for adding an extra fan to boost airflow inside your computer case.
- 4-Pin Fan Header Support: Mobo 4 pin fan splitter connects to the 4-pin header on your motherboard and splits the PWM signal to 2 PWM fans. Both fans can spin at the same speed using motherboard software with PWM control support.
- Sync for Consistent Speeds: Master/slave PWM splitter includes a 4 pin fan connector that transmits the RPM signal to the motherboard, ensuring synchronized fan speeds for both fans. The computer fan splitter omits the RPM signal pin on the second fan for tandem operation.
- Tidy Setup with PWM Y Cable: Double CPU fan splitter supports up to 4 fans using this cost-effective 2-pack of fan header splitter cables. The black-sleeved and wrapped 4-inch PWM Y splitter cable ensures a clean and organized build—perfect for open computer cases.
- Works with 3-Pin & 4-Pin Case Fans: 3-pin & 4-pin fan compatible with popular cooling fans such as Corsair Air Series AF120 80mm / AF140 High Airflow, Cooler Master Blade Master 80 / Master 92, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 120mm, JetFlo 120mm, SickleFlow 120mm, MegaFlow 200mm, Noctua NF-F12, and Thermaltake WATER 3.0 Dual 240.
Marine engines
A 1997-revision Mercury outboard service-manual excerpt identifies a tachometer signal terminal and separately covers fuel-pump service. It does not establish a universal connection between those circuits. Use the manual for the specific outboard rather than transferring automotive wiring assumptions.
Industrial pumps
The ITW Dynatec Dynamelt M ASU manual, revised November 2001, describes an optional tach generator or DC tracking signal used for gear-pump speed control. That is a distinct industrial application; its signal and connections should be interpreted only within the machine’s own documentation.

When a step-by-step wiring procedure is appropriate
A wiring procedure is only reliable when it names the equipment and follows its matching diagram. The available information does not identify your vehicle or machine, pump, controller, connector, or required component ratings, so it cannot support universal connection steps or component sizing. Obtain the official manual for the exact setup before proceeding.
