T-Mobile announced iPhone Handoff at $5 per month. It lets you use one T-Mobile number on two compatible iPhones, switching which one is active by unlocking it. That is the announced recurring fee, not a confirmed all-in bill total: T-Mobile’s announcement does not specify taxes or other charges.
What the $5 monthly fee includes
T-Mobile’s newsroom announcement says, “T‑Mobile is introducing the feature at $5/month.” The fee is for using iPhone Handoff with a second iPhone and a single phone number. The announcement does not say whether taxes, surcharges, activation charges, or partial-month billing apply. Apple likewise cautions that “Carrier fees might apply when enrolling in iPhone Handoff.” Confirm the full charge with T-Mobile before enrolling. T-Mobile’s announcement and Apple’s Handoff support information are the primary sources for the price and enrollment caveat.

How iPhone Handoff works
Handoff extends one phone number across two iPhones; it does not make both phones active on the network at once. Unlock the iPhone you want to use, and it becomes the active phone. Calls, voicemail, messages, and Find My location follow the active device. This is different from Apple’s existing Handoff feature, which lets people continue app activity between Apple devices. What you need before setting it up
Apple’s published requirements call for both iPhones to meet the following conditions:
- Run iOS 27 or later.
- Be connected to Wi-Fi and signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Have Messages in iCloud enabled, with FaceTime and iMessage signed in to that same account.
- Use an eSIM from a participating carrier. Apple lists T-Mobile for the United States.
T-Mobile identifies the iPhone 18 Pro lineup as ready for Handoff. Check Apple’s current requirements and T-Mobile’s availability details before enrolling, since device support and participating carriers can change. Apple’s support page covers setup and compatibility.

How to enroll and switch between iPhones
Apple says enrollment is available during new-iPhone setup or later in Settings. The exact on-screen wording can vary by iOS version, so follow the Handoff option shown during setup or in Settings rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Make sure both iPhones meet Apple’s requirements and are connected to Wi-Fi.
- Enroll in iPhone Handoff during setup of the new iPhone or later through the Handoff option in Settings. Follow the carrier prompts.
- To change the active phone, unlock the iPhone you want to use. Apple says a confirmation message appears after the switch.
Limitations to know before paying
- Only one iPhone is active at a time. Handoff does not let both devices use the number simultaneously on the network.
- Apple Watch pairing does not move. Apple recommends pairing the watch with the iPhone you use most often.
- Some carrier services stay tied to the main iPhone. Apple specifically notes that Call Forwarding, Caller ID, and carrier account management can only be managed there.
- Some secondary-phone services are plan-dependent. T-Mobile lists Scam Shield and T-Satellite for eligible plans, not as guaranteed features on every account.
How to cancel iPhone Handoff
Apple says to contact your carrier to turn Handoff off. Contact T-Mobile and ask it to disable the service. Do not assume deleting the eSIM alone cancels the subscription or stops billing. The published information does not establish whether cancellation is prorated or whether any partial-month fee is refunded, so ask T-Mobile how the change will affect your next bill.

Is the fee worth it?
The $5 monthly charge may suit someone who wants the same number and core phone services on a second iPhone without maintaining a separate number. Before enrolling, weigh the recurring charge against how often you will use the second device, whether your plan supports the listed services, and whether having only one active iPhone at a time fits your needs. The available official information establishes Handoff’s announced fee and behavior, but does not provide a complete cost comparison with alternatives.
