iOS is Apple’s operating system for iPhone. It provides the core interface and system functions, and the environment where built-in and third-party apps run. As of October 9, 2026, Apple’s update notes include iOS 26.7.1; the exact latest release can change, so check Apple’s iOS update notes for the current status.
What is iOS?
iOS is the system software that makes an iPhone work as a connected device. It supplies the interface, manages built-in capabilities and provides the software environment for apps. An app is what you open to perform a task; iOS is the underlying system that lets the phone and its apps function together. Apple describes the experience across the Lock Screen, Home Screen, apps and controls in its iOS 26 overview.

What is the latest iOS version?
Apple’s current-version materials concern iOS 26. The most recently surfaced update notes identify iOS 26.7.1 as a security update. The iOS 26.7 notes describe Apple Music features, emoji and other changes, along with bug fixes and security updates. Because Apple can release later updates, check the official iOS update notes for the latest point release rather than relying on a static version number.
Apple introduced iOS 26 with a Liquid Glass design, expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities, and changes to Phone, Messages, CarPlay, Apple Music, Maps and Wallet. Apple’s availability warning applies: features may not be available on every iPhone or in every region, and language, carrier and hardware requirements can also matter. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, described the release this way: “iOS 26 shines with the gorgeous new design and meaningful improvements to the features users rely on every day, making iPhone even more helpful.” The announcement appeared in Apple’s June 9, 2025 iOS 26 announcement.

Which iPhones support iOS 26?
Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guidance lists iPhone 11 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Eligibility for the operating-system update does not guarantee that every iOS feature will work on every supported phone. Check Apple’s compatibility guide for the current supported-model details and feature qualifications.

How do I check my iOS version and update?
- Check the installed version and model: Open Settings > General > About. The About screen shows the iOS version installed and identifies the device.
- Look for an update: Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available for your iPhone, this screen shows it and provides Apple’s update options.
Apple’s iPhone update instructions cover the update process. The version available to install is governed by your specific model’s compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be said about older iOS versions?
Apple maintains separate documentation for older major releases, including an iOS 18 update page, as well as versioned iPhone user guides. That establishes that older releases have their own support and update documentation; it is not a complete chronology of every iOS release or the earlier iPhone OS naming era. For a specific older iPhone, use Apple’s model-specific support information rather than assuming that it can install the current major version.
