iPhone Duo is a foldable phone: it works as a phone on a 5.4-inch outer display and opens to a 7.6-inch display. The iPad mini is a dedicated tablet with an 8.3-inch screen and iPadOS. Choose Duo if you want a phone that can expand for occasional larger-screen use; choose iPad mini if you want a compact tablet, iPad apps, or established Apple Pencil workflows.
That is a feature-based distinction, not a hands-on verdict. Apple announced Duo for October 23, 2026 availability, so as of October 7 the sources available for this comparison did not establish how well it works as a mini-tablet in everyday use.
What is different about the form factor?

Apple describes iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. Folded, it has a 5.4-inch outer display; opened, it presents a 7.6-inch inner display. Its core role remains that of a phone, with a larger screen available when unfolded.

iPad mini is a dedicated tablet
The iPad mini has a single 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display and runs iPadOS. It is designed as a compact tablet rather than a phone that changes size. Apple’s iPad mini product page describes support for multiple apps at once and iPad-specific apps.

The diagonal measurements do not tell you exactly how much usable content fits on each screen. Aspect ratio, rounded corners, app layout, and Duo’s physical fold all affect the viewing experience.
How do iOS 27 and iPadOS differ?
iPhone Duo’s announced multitasking
Duo runs iOS 27, adapted for folded and unfolded use. Apple says users can put two apps side by side in Split View, open two windows of the same app, and save pairs of apps. These are announced software features; they do not by themselves establish that Duo handles tablet-style work in the same way as an iPad.

iPad mini’s tablet software
iPad mini runs iPadOS, with iPad-specific apps and its own multiple-app workflows. If you depend on a particular iPad app or established iPad routine, that is a concrete reason to favor the mini. The operating systems and multitasking experiences are different, so the screen-size figures alone are not a substitute for checking whether your apps support the tasks you need.

Which device is better for a Pencil?
Apple lists iPad mini compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple announced that iPhone Duo would support Apple Pencil (USB-C) later in 2026, but that support had not yet reached its announced release window as of October 7. Duo’s announced Pencil compatibility therefore should not be treated as an already available feature.

If note-taking, sketching, or marking up documents with a Pencil is central to your choice, iPad mini has listed support for both Pencil models now. If you are considering Duo for those tasks, check that its USB-C Pencil support has shipped and confirm the exact compatibility before buying.
Can iPhone Duo replace an iPad mini?
It could suit someone who primarily wants a phone and would use a larger screen occasionally. Its unfolded display is smaller by diagonal measurement than the mini’s, and it runs iOS 27 rather than iPadOS. The announced split view and app-pair features may help with two-app use, but they do not prove that it replaces a tablet for every workflow.

The iPad mini is the more straightforward fit if you want a dedicated tablet, iPadOS apps, or the listed Apple Pencil Pro support. Whether Duo can take the place of your mini depends on the specific apps and tasks you use; Apple’s pre-release specifications do not settle that real-world question.
What do the announced price and release date tell you?
Apple announced a US starting price of $1,999 for iPhone Duo, with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. Apple said preorders would begin October 16, 2026, with availability beginning October 23. These are announced US price and timing details, not evidence that Duo was on sale on October 7.

A current iPad mini price is not established by the cited information, so these figures do not support a direct value comparison. Check Apple’s live store for current pricing in your region before deciding; do not assume Duo is cheaper than owning a phone and tablet without comparing the actual models and configurations you would buy.
What is known about Duo battery life?
Apple’s preproduction-device estimates are up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen, up to 44 hours using the outer display, and up to 24 hours of typical use with both displays used equally. These are manufacturer test claims under specified usage profiles, not independent results or a guarantee of everyday battery life; actual results vary. The cited information does not provide a comparable iPad mini figure.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose iPhone Duo if you want a phone-first device that unfolds to a larger display and its announced iOS multitasking features match your needs.
- Choose iPad mini if you want a separate compact tablet, use iPadOS apps or workflows, or want the listed Apple Pencil Pro and USB-C Pencil compatibility.
- Wait to decide about replacing a mini if your choice depends on hands-on use, long-term foldable durability, or Duo’s actual performance in your apps. The cited launch material establishes announced features, not those outcomes.
Apple also announced an iPhone Duo Case and an iPhone Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand. Apple listed both as MagSafe and Qi2 25W compatible, with US prices of $79 for the case and $129 for the folio and ordering beginning October 16, 2026. Those accessories are for Duo; an iPad case should not be assumed to fit it.

Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement identifies Duo as a foldable iPhone and gives its display and software details. The Associated Press reported Apple’s launch and quoted CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood describing the launch as Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone category. Neither source establishes long-term durability or independent real-world performance.
