Software-defined storage (SDS) is a storage architecture in which software manages storage resources and services separately from the particular drives and servers that hold the data. It can pool capacity, automate provisioning, and apply storage policies across supported hardware. It does not eliminate physical infrastructure, make every kind of hardware interchangeable, or guarantee lower costs or better performance.

How software-defined storage works

An SDS system places a software management layer between workloads and the underlying storage resources. Administrators can present storage to applications as logical volumes, file services, or object storage; depending on the product, the software can manage placement, protection, and administration across the resources it supports.

A useful way to picture SDS is as a software-managed pool. A workload requests storage through an interface, while the system handles the configured policies and physical resources behind that interface. The data still resides on physical drives or on supported cloud-backed storage. Hardware, networking, software compatibility, and configuration continue to set the system’s practical limits.

The architecture can separate management and policy decisions from the path that carries data I/O. Microsoft Research describes this design goal as decoupling control from data flow so policies can be applied. That is an architectural motivation, not a promise that every SDS product uses the same design.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

What SDS can help an organization do

  • Choose or reuse hardware: Some platforms support standard servers or existing capacity rather than requiring one proprietary storage array. The actual choices depend on the platform’s compatibility and support rules.
  • Scale capacity: Some systems grow by adding drives or nodes. Expansion can also require more network and compute resources, licensing, and time to rebalance data; scale is not unlimited.
  • Automate routine work: Software interfaces and APIs can help provision storage, monitor resources, and apply policies centrally. Administrators still need to plan capacity, respond to incidents, and operate the system.
  • Pool resources: Pooling or tiering can help place workloads on suitable resources. The result depends on the media, workload, protection overhead, and configuration.
  • Design for resilience: Replication or erasure coding can provide availability and recovery options. Those mechanisms require deliberate failure-domain design, sufficient spare capacity, and recovery testing.

Potential use cases include virtualized environments, cloud computing, high-performance computing, big-data analytics, and disaster recovery. These are possible fits, not evidence that SDS is the best choice for every workload in those categories.

How SDS differs from related storage terms

Term What it describes How it relates to SDS
Storage virtualization Abstracting or pooling storage capacity so multiple devices can be presented as a single resource. It can be one technique used in SDS. SDS is broader: it describes software-defined management and delivery of storage services.
NAS Network-attached file storage that clients access over a network. NAS describes a storage service and access method; an SDS platform can provide or support NAS.
Cloud storage Storage delivered as part of a broader on-demand service model, often with self-service provisioning and metered or elastic resources. SDS can run in a cloud or provide storage into one, but SDS by itself does not make a service a cloud.
Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) An infrastructure model that combines storage with other virtualized infrastructure components. SDS can be part of HCI. Some deployments instead keep compute and storage in separate clusters.

Example: Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct

Microsoft documents Storage Spaces Direct as an SDS feature in Windows Server and Azure Local. It combines internal drives across a cluster into a software-defined pool. The resulting volumes can support either a hyperconverged cluster or a disaggregated (converged) arrangement. Microsoft’s documentation lists Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, and Azure Local 2311.2 and later; check current platform documentation for applicability before planning a deployment.

Microsoft’s requirements illustrate why “commodity hardware” does not mean any hardware will work. For Storage Spaces Direct, Microsoft specifies a cluster of 2–16 approved physical servers and direct-attached SATA, SAS, NVMe, or persistent-memory drives. It strongly recommends 10+ GbE networking with RDMA. These are product-specific requirements and recommendations, not minimums for SDS as a whole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Learn also publishes Storage Spaces Direct capability figures of up to 16 servers, over 400 drives, and 4 petabytes per cluster, and up to 2.4× storage efficiency from erasure coding. These are vendor-published product claims, not independent benchmarks or guarantees for a particular configuration. Microsoft’s linked claim of over 13.7 million IOPS per server is likewise a product-specific vendor figure; it should not be treated as typical or independently verified performance.

What to assess before choosing an SDS platform

Compare platforms against the workload and operating model you actually have, rather than assuming that the SDS label guarantees flexibility or savings.

  • Workload and interfaces: Confirm the required block, file, or object interfaces and test representative workloads, including their latency and throughput needs.
  • Hardware and topology: Check the supported server and drive list, deployment topology, and whether storage can grow independently of compute.
  • Network behavior: Account for bandwidth, latency, traffic between nodes, and the network requirements of protection and rebuild operations.
  • Failure handling: Understand failure domains, replication or erasure-coding behavior, rebuild time, spare-capacity needs, and how recovery objectives will be tested.
  • Scale limits: Establish supported node and capacity limits, expansion steps, and what happens to workload performance as the system grows.
  • Total cost: Include software licensing, servers, drives, networking, support, and the staff time and skills needed to operate the platform. A claim of lower hardware cost alone does not establish lower total cost.
  • Integration and daily operations: Verify compatibility with hypervisors, containers, cloud environments, monitoring, and backup, then assess upgrades, troubleshooting, and capacity planning.

Does SDS guarantee lower cost or higher performance?

No. SDS can enable hardware choice, consolidation, automation, and scale-out, but whether those reduce cost or improve performance depends on the platform, workload, configuration, and operating costs. The sources cited for this overview do not establish an apples-to-apples product benchmark, pricing comparison, or independent performance study. Treat vendor performance and efficiency figures as scoped claims, then validate the system against your own requirements.
