Plex still tempts me with its polished experience, broad device support, and bundled features. I choose Jellyfin because its optional plugins let me shape my media server around the tools and integrations I want, rather than treating the default feature set as the limit. That preference is personal, not a claim that Jellyfin is better for every household.
Why Jellyfin’s plugin ecosystem keeps me there
Jellyfin is free software for managing and streaming personal media, and it presents itself as an alternative to proprietary media servers such as Plex. Its plugin system is the practical reason I prefer it: I can add functions and integrations as my needs change instead of relying only on what ships in the core server.
Plugins can change how the server fits your setup
Jellyfin documents optional plugins for authentication, channels, general integrations, Live TV, metadata, and notifications. Depending on what you use, extensions can connect tools such as Trakt.tv, Kodi, NextPVR, TVHeadend, Gotify, or Slack, or add metadata sources and modifiers. These are examples named in Jellyfin’s plugin documentation, not a promise that every extension is actively maintained or compatible with every server version.
Installation is flexible, but upkeep is part of the deal
Many plugins can be installed from a catalog in the server settings. Jellyfin also documents manual installation and both official and third-party repositories. That flexibility matters to me because it leaves room for community-built extensions and custom choices. It also means I check an individual plugin’s release history and compatibility information before depending on it. The project’s criteria for entries on its official client list do not certify every plugin; clients and plugins are different categories.

- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
What makes Plex hard to leave
Plex can feel more turnkey, and its feature bundle is a genuine attraction. Plex Pass lists remote streaming, downloads, intro and credit skipping, DVR, and hardware-accelerated streaming among its features. Remote Watch Pass is a narrower option for remote streaming, rather than the broader Plex Pass bundle. Those distinctions are laid out in Plex’s Plex Pass overview and Remote Watch Pass overview.
Device support and the experience on the devices a household already owns can matter more than plugins. Before switching, I would check whether each person’s television, streaming device, phone, or computer has a suitable client and whether playback works well with the media formats they actually use. No general comparison can substitute for that compatibility check.

Remote Plex video playback has a subscription condition
Since April 29, 2025, Plex’s policy for remote playback of personal video on affected apps requires an active Plex Pass on the server-admin account, an active Plex Pass on the viewer’s account, or an active Remote Watch Pass on the viewer’s account. If the server owner has Plex Pass, other users accessing that server can stream remotely under the policy. The affected-app list spans mobile, desktop, web, Roku, smart-TV, and game-console platforms, and Plex says additional apps may be included. Because the list and rollout can change, check Plex’s live remote playback requirements for the specific app you use.

Playback and transcoding still depend on your devices and files
Jellyfin aims for direct play when a client supports the file’s container, video, audio, and subtitles. If one component is unsupported, playback may need a direct stream or conversion; unsupported video codecs require video transcoding. Subtitles can be a particular burden when they must be burned into the video. Jellyfin explains these behaviors in its client documentation.
Jellyfin says the client requests local-source transcoding according to its capabilities. Its transcoding documentation describes hardware acceleration on modern Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip GPUs when the required hardware is available. Actual results depend on hardware, drivers, codecs, client support, media files, and configuration.

Plex also supports hardware-assisted conversion on compatible hardware, but Plex identifies hardware-accelerated streaming as a Plex Pass feature. Its hardware-acceleration guide explains the requirement and how supported video hardware can convert media more efficiently than software transcoding. If your server routinely has to convert video, include the relevant subscription and hardware needs in your decision.
Switching from Plex to Jellyfin takes planning
A move is not necessarily a one-click transfer. Jellyfin says its internal databases cannot be copied or adjusted easily. Its migration guide describes third-party API scripts for moving watched status and users from Plex or other instances, and notes that preserving the same file paths can help in some scenarios. It does not promise a complete transfer of Plex metadata or settings.

- Keep a recoverable backup. Preserve your existing server data and media organization until you have checked the new setup.
- Confirm file paths. Matching paths can help in some migration cases, but do not assume that matching paths move databases or all settings.
- Verify the result. Check user access, watched status, metadata, and playback on the actual client devices before retiring the Plex setup.
Who should choose which server?
I stay with Jellyfin because its extensibility and the control that comes with choosing integrations matter more to me than a more managed, turnkey experience. Someone who values Plex’s polished feature bundle, supported devices, or convenience more may reasonably prefer Plex—especially if their existing setup works well for their household.
- Jellyfin may suit you if you want optional plugins, are comfortable checking compatibility and maintenance, and value control over your server setup.
- Plex may suit you if its client experience and bundled conveniences are a better match for the devices and remote-playback needs you have.
Try the clients and media formats that matter to you before making a categorical choice. The best fit depends on how your own library plays, what your household uses, and how much maintenance you want to take on.
