A black camera preview is often caused by a closed privacy shutter, blocked lens, denied camera permission, or another app using the camera. First check for a physical obstruction, then test the built-in Camera app. That comparison helps distinguish a problem with one app from a device-wide issue. If the camera’s own LCD is dark, use the separate display checks below; a blank camera screen is not the same symptom as a black webcam feed.
Start with the quickest checks
- Open the shutter and uncover the lens. Check for a sliding privacy shutter, physical switch, keyboard privacy key, or lens cap. Remove any case, film, or accessory that could cover the lens. On a phone with front and rear cameras, test each one. Apple’s camera troubleshooting guidance also advises removing accessories that may obstruct the camera.
- Try the built-in Camera app. If it shows an image but the app you need remains black, the camera can produce an image in that test. Focus next on the affected app’s camera selection, permissions, or settings. If the built-in app is black too, continue with system and device checks. Google Meet and Microsoft recommend testing the camera in another app.
- Check camera access and close other camera apps. Make sure camera access is enabled in the operating system and allowed for the app or browser. Fully close other video or camera apps, then reopen the app that shows black. In a meeting app, confirm that the correct camera device is selected.
Work out whether the problem is app-specific
| What you see | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The built-in Camera app works, but one app shows black | The camera produces an image in the built-in app; the other app may have a selection, permission, or configuration problem. | Check the selected camera and the app, browser, and operating-system permissions. |
| The built-in app and multiple other camera apps show black | A physical block, device setting, driver or software issue, or hardware fault is possible. | Check the shutter and permissions, restart or update, then consult support for the exact device. |
| A webcam feed is black while another camera app may be open | Another app may be using the camera. For Elgato Facecam, the manufacturer also lists a lens cover, USB connection, and exposure settings among checks. | Close other camera apps. For Elgato Facecam, follow its model-specific steps, including reconnecting USB if needed. |
| A camera’s own LCD is blank or dark | A display control, display routing, cable, or sensor may be involved; this is different from a black webcam feed. | Use the model-specific LCD checks below. |
Restart or update using your device’s instructions
- iPhone or iPad: Apple recommends restarting the device and updating iOS as part of its camera troubleshooting steps. See Apple’s instructions.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11: Microsoft recommends updating the camera driver for a black screen or no video, then restarting after the update. Follow Microsoft’s Windows camera guidance.
- Google Pixel phone or tablet: Google’s troubleshooting steps include restarting and clearing the Camera app cache. Follow the instructions for your device in Pixel Camera Help.
Menu names and steps can differ by operating-system version and device. Use the maker’s current instructions for your exact model rather than applying a path intended for another device.
If the camera’s own LCD is blank or dark
A dark screen on a standalone camera does not automatically mean its image sensor has failed. Sony’s instructions apply to the Cyber-shot and Mavica models covered by its support article, not necessarily to every camera. They advise checking that the camera is on, removing the lens cover, disconnecting A/V cables, trying the FINDER/LCD or DISPLAY control, and making sure the eyepiece sensor is not blocked. If the screen remains blank, Sony recommends resetting the camera; if that does not resolve the issue, seek repair. Check the instructions for your exact model. See Sony’s LCD troubleshooting steps.

If the built-in camera and multiple other camera apps still fail after you have checked for obstructions and access problems and tried the relevant restart or update steps, a device fault becomes more plausible. Consult the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for diagnosis. Google specifically advises seeking repair when other apps also crash while accessing the camera on a Pixel; Apple and Sony also direct persistent problems toward service in their respective device guidance. If only one app fails while the built-in camera works, investigate that app’s settings and permissions first.
