There is no fixed amount: hotspot data depends on what the laptop does, app settings, and background activity. Text-heavy browsing may use relatively little, while video streaming, video calls, or a Windows update can consume much more. Estimate by activity and time, then use your carrier’s usage meter to track what counts against your plan.
What counts as laptop hotspot data?
Data used by devices connected or tethered to a mobile hotspot counts against the mobile plan’s data allowance, according to AT&T. The laptop’s activity matters more than the fact that it is a laptop: a few text pages and a high-resolution video session have very different data demands.
Published figures below are planning examples, not results from a controlled comparison. They come from different providers and contexts; actual use varies with the app, content, quality settings, and time spent.

Streaming quality can change the total substantially. Netflix lists up to 0.3 GB per hour at low quality and up to 0.7 GB per hour at medium. Its high setting can use up to 1 GB per hour for SD, 3 GB per hour for HD, or 7 GB per hour for 4K. Netflix’s mobile Save Data setting uses about six hours per GB; Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more. These are Netflix service estimates, not a guarantee for every stream or device. Verizon’s older examples illustrate how widely activity can vary: its page lists 10 KB for a text-only email page without an attachment, 70 KB for a five-page text Word document, 1 MB for a typical web-page lookup, and 5 MB per hour for online games. It also lists 60 MB per hour for audio streaming, 75 MB per hour for video VoIP on 3G and 260 MB per hour on 4G LTE, and 260 MB per hour for standard-definition video on 3G versus 650 MB per hour on 4G LTE. Its 4G LTE example for 720p HD video is 2 GB per hour. The figures were published on a page last updated September 6, 2019; they are historical examples, not current guaranteed usage rates. Verizon notes that actual file sizes and app usage vary.
How to estimate your session or monthly allowance
Multiply the relevant published per-minute or per-hour estimate by the time you expect to spend on that activity, then add separate activities such as calls, uploads, and updates. Treat the result as an approximation: the estimates use different definitions and quality settings, and background activity can add data you did not plan for.

Example: a mixed-use session
Suppose you browse for 30 minutes, then stream video for 60 minutes. Using EE’s published averages, browsing would be about 30–120 MB and video about 120–180 MB. Together, that is roughly 150–300 MB before accounting for other apps or background activity. This is an estimate based on EE’s figures, not a measured session.

Allow for large background downloads
A laptop update can outweigh many minutes of light browsing. Verizon’s 200–500 MB Windows-update example is from 2019, so do not use it to predict a particular update’s size; check the update download itself where possible and defer it if your allowance is tight.

How to reduce unexpected data use on Windows
- Mark the hotspot as metered. In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi, select the hotspot network’s properties, and turn on Metered connection. Microsoft says this can change app behavior and prevent some Windows updates from downloading automatically. Labels and available settings can vary by device and Windows version. Microsoft’s cellular settings guidance covers Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.
- Set a Windows data limit if available. Use Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Data usage to review usage and set a limit when those controls are present. This can help Windows stay within a target; it does not guarantee every app will honor the limit.
- Review cellular access for apps. Disable access for apps that do not need cellular data. Microsoft notes that some installed apps may still use cellular data even if they are not listed in that screen.
- Pause automatic downloads and updates. Turn off automatic app updates or downloads on limited connections, and postpone software or firmware updates until you have access to Wi-Fi. EE recommends these steps to reduce data use.
- Lower video quality and autoplay. Choose a lower stream quality where available and turn off autoplay when an app offers that control. EE recommends standard rather than HD video when conserving data and disabling Facebook video autoplay on mobile data; Netflix documents its playback data settings.
How to check what the hotspot actually used
Check your mobile provider’s app or account usage meter for the relevant billing period, and confirm whether your plan distinguishes hotspot use from other mobile data. AT&T directs customers to usage alerts and states that tethered devices use the plan allowance. AT&T’s hotspot data guidance explains the allowance rule.
Windows counters can help identify which apps or interfaces used data, but they are not necessarily the carrier’s billable total. Microsoft’s mobile broadband documentation describes local counters as estimates and says carrier billing data is authoritative after processing; shared-plan accounting may also include traffic not reflected in a local counter.

Carrier reporting can also lag. Verizon says its Data Utilization categories typically update within 48 hours, may omit roaming or delayed records, and are not designed to match billed units or identify specific websites and apps. Verizon recommends its Usage page or dialing #DATA to monitor actual usage. Verizon’s usage FAQ describes these limits.
Why a data allowance does not guarantee a particular speed
Data volume and connection speed are separate. T-Mobile says experienced performance can depend on the programs running, distance from the cell site, network capacity, weather, terrain, indoor or moving-vehicle use, radio interference, other network users, high-speed data allotments, video optimization, plan features, and prioritization, including smartphone hotspot use. A plan’s allowance alone therefore does not promise a particular speed. T-Mobile describes factors affecting internet service performance.
