To fix Wi-Fi latency spikes while gaming, first check whether the delay is between your device and router or farther along the route to the game. On Windows, ping the Wi-Fi connection’s default gateway while the spike is happening, then compare the same session over Ethernet if possible. A stable gateway ping but poor game connection points away from the local Wi-Fi hop; a wired connection that is stable when Wi-Fi is not points toward the wireless link.
What to check before changing Wi-Fi settings
Record the game, when the spike occurs, whether the ping rises or packets are lost, and whether anyone is streaming or downloading at the time. This gives you a consistent point of comparison as you test. A latency spike can come from the Wi-Fi signal, interference, network load, the device or router, the ISP route, or the game service; a spike alone does not identify which one.
Ping the router from a Windows PC
- Open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig. - Under the Wi-Fi adapter, find Default Gateway and note its address.
- While the game is experiencing a spike, run
ping <gateway-address>, replacing the text with the address you found. For example:ping 192.168.1.1. - Watch for high or inconsistent response times or timeouts. A stable response means the PC can reach the router reliably at that moment; it does not test the entire route to the game server.
Microsoft’s Windows guidance explains how to use a gateway ping to check the connection to the router and how to interpret the result. If the gateway is unstable, investigate the Wi-Fi/device/router path first. If it is stable during the game problem, look farther upstream, including the modem, ISP route, or game service. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps apply to Windows 10 and 11; exact screens can vary by version.

Connect the PC or console to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the test under similar conditions. If the wired session is stable while Wi-Fi is not, focus on wireless signal, interference, channel use, or the Wi-Fi adapter. If both connections are poor, the cause may be beyond Wi-Fi, so check for an ISP or game-service issue as well. Ethernet is a useful comparison, not a guarantee against upstream routing or server problems. Microsoft recommends trying a wired connection to help isolate connection issues, and Google Fiber describes wired connections as more reliable and lower-latency than Wi-Fi in general.

If your PC has no Ethernet port, Microsoft notes that a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an option. See Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance for setup and basic checks.
Choose the Wi-Fi band that works in your gaming room
Do not assume the highest-frequency band is automatically best. Microsoft describes 5 GHz as faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz, but with shorter range and poorer performance through walls. A 6 GHz connection can offer low congestion and lower latency near the router, but it also has shorter range and requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment. The best option is the band that stays stable where the device is used.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Near the router: Compare 5 GHz, or 6 GHz if both router and device support it.
- Farther away or behind walls: Test 2.4 GHz; its range and wall penetration may suit the location better.
- With separate network names: Connect to each available band in turn and compare during similar gaming sessions.
Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance explains these range and congestion trade-offs. Signal strength matters for reliability, but a strong signal alone does not establish that the ISP route or game service is healthy.
Improve signal and reduce interference
Place the router in a central, elevated, open spot rather than on the floor, in a corner, or inside a metal cabinet. Reduce the number of walls and large metal objects between it and the gaming device. Nearby devices that use similar radio frequencies, including microwave ovens, can also interfere. Microsoft recommends checking signal and nearby networks, while its wireless-network setup guidance covers router placement and interference.

- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products

For channel selection, Microsoft suggests considering channels 1, 6, or 11 on 2.4 GHz and choosing a less occupied channel on 5 GHz. Use the router’s automatic channel selection or a Wi-Fi analyzer to see which channels are busy, then compare performance in the gaming room. Channel availability and router menus vary by model and local radio rules, so use the controls available on your equipment. See Microsoft’s home-layout guidance and wireless-network setup guidance.

Pause large downloads and high-bandwidth streams temporarily, then repeat the game test. If the spikes ease while other traffic is paused, competing household use may be contributing. The effect depends on the connection and traffic; this test does not prove that every spike is caused by congestion. Google’s guidance notes that simultaneous activities such as streaming, downloads, and gaming can slow a connection depending on the service. Check the device, router, and connection in a reversible order
Restart once and observe the result
Restarting the modem and router is a reasonable first-line reset, but it is not a diagnosis. Note whether the problem improves and for how long. Microsoft includes a modem/router restart among its connection troubleshooting steps; Google says restarting a Google Wifi device can sometimes help connectivity. The latter guidance applies to Google equipment, not every router model.

Review Windows adapter and router software
If the gateway ping is unstable over Wi-Fi, check the Windows Wi-Fi adapter’s power-saving settings and driver, and check whether router firmware needs an update. Menu names depend on Windows and router versions. Microsoft includes these checks in its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
When a new router is—and is not—the next step
Latency spikes by themselves do not prove that the router is defective. First compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, test bands in the gaming room, improve placement, check channel use, and pause other traffic. If Ethernet is also unstable, a new Wi-Fi router may not address a problem on the modem, ISP route, or game-service side. A cable or compatible adapter is a targeted option when a wired connection is practical; no particular cable category or new router is established as a way to reduce ping by a specific amount.
For Google mesh equipment, placement, distance, obstructions, frequency, and interference can affect performance; consult Google’s Nest Wifi and Google Wifi performance guidance for device-specific advice.
