Yes, a VPN can use extra battery, but there is no reliable single percentage that applies to every device. In tests, standby impact was negligible or undetectable on four Android phones, while active-use results varied by phone and task. A separate provider-run streaming test reported higher battery use with its VPN enabled. Your result depends on the device, workload, network and VPN setup.

What the battery tests found

The available tests used different devices, providers, tasks and measurements, so their numbers should be read separately—not averaged into a universal estimate.

Standby and web browsing on four Android phones

GSMArena tested NordVPN on the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, Realme GT 6, Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Its standby test left the VPN connected in the background; the publication reported that any difference was negligible or too small to detect. Three phones had close, though not identical, reported full-battery standby times, and the Redmi’s times were identical. The test was repeated a couple of times. (GSMArena’s test and results.)

In a separate continuous-browsing test—with page loading, scrolling, frequent screen interaction and brightness set to 200 nits—GSMArena reported these reductions in full runtime with the VPN connected:

Phone Reduction in full browsing runtime
Motorola Edge 50 Pro 1.13%
Realme GT 6 3.75%
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 10.57%
Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G 17.56%

These are differences in full runtime during that continuous browsing test, not percentages of battery every user should expect to lose in a day. They describe one VPN provider on four particular Android phones.

One-hour Netflix streaming test

ExpressVPN says it charged each device to 100%, streamed Netflix for 60 minutes using a Los Angeles server, then turned the VPN off, recharged to 100% and streamed for another 60 minutes. Background notifications and system activity continued in both runs. The tested devices were an iPhone 15 running iOS 17.3.1, a Google Pixel 6A running Android 14 and a MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma. The vendor reported these battery-level changes:

Device VPN on: battery used in 60 minutes VPN off: battery used in 60 minutes Difference between reported drops
iPhone 15 24 percentage points 10 percentage points 14 percentage points
Google Pixel 6A 35 percentage points 21 percentage points 14 percentage points
MacBook Pro 37 percentage points 18 percentage points 19 percentage points

The differences are simple subtractions between the battery drops in those paired runs; they are not estimates for other VPN apps or devices. ExpressVPN is the VPN provider that conducted this test, not an independent multi-provider lab. Its page characterizes the impact as “minimal,” but the reported table also shows substantial total battery use during the streaming hour. (ExpressVPN’s test description and results.)

Older academic evidence

A University of California dissertation reported 13% battery use without a VPN and 16% with its AntMonitor Client-Server implementation during a simulated typical-day Wi-Fi test. The authors described the additional three percentage points as modest in that scenario. This older research implementation is useful historical evidence that VPN overhead can be measured, but it is not a current estimate for commercial VPN apps. (University of California dissertation.)

Why VPN battery use varies

A VPN routes network traffic through a VPN service and may stay active in the background. That can add work, but a battery reading cannot by itself show that encryption alone caused the drain. A fair comparison needs the same device and battery condition, workload, brightness, network and signal, with VPN-on and VPN-off runs under otherwise matched conditions.

  • Standby versus active use: a connected VPN while the phone is idle is a different workload from continuous browsing or video streaming.
  • Device and battery condition: the four-phone browsing results varied widely, and neither modern test establishes what a different model or an aging battery will do.
  • Network and signal: Wi-Fi versus cellular, signal quality and other network conditions can change power use. ExpressVPN advises that weak cellular signal and difficult network conditions can increase battery load; this is vendor guidance, not an isolated finding from the tests above.
  • App and protocol: VPN apps and protocols differ. The available tests do not establish a cross-provider ranking or a universal most-efficient protocol.

Android Developers documents that “Android can start a VPN service when the device boots and keep it running while the device is on.” This describes Android’s always-on VPN capability, not a measurement of its battery cost. (Android Developers: VPN.)

How to check whether your VPN is behind the drain

  1. Choose one repeatable activity. Compare a defined period of standby, browsing or streaming rather than mixing different tasks.
  2. Run matched VPN-on and VPN-off comparisons. Keep brightness, network, location, apps and activity as consistent as possible. Record the starting and ending battery levels, and repeat the comparison if practical. The paired setup makes your result more informative than an app’s battery attribution alone.
  3. Separate idle from active-use results. If the change appears during browsing but not standby, focus on active network use; the GSMArena results illustrate why those situations should not be conflated.
  4. Check signal and background activity. Test where cellular reception is stable, and review whether unnecessary background apps or system activity differ between runs. ExpressVPN recommends reducing unnecessary background apps and keeping the VPN app current, but the cited material does not quantify savings from either action.
  5. Try another protocol only if your provider offers one. Compare it on the same device and workload. ExpressVPN promotes its Lightway protocol as using less battery than alternatives; that is a vendor claim, not an independently established cross-provider ranking.
  6. Assess battery health separately. A worn battery can be a general device problem rather than a VPN-specific fault. Any replacement should be compatible with the exact device.

Should you turn the VPN off?

Turning a VPN off can be a useful temporary diagnostic step, but it means your traffic is no longer inside that VPN tunnel. Do not make disabling security protections the default fix. The effect of turning it off also depends on device settings: Android’s always-on VPN can block connections that do not use the VPN, while Apple describes always-on VPN for supervised devices as the only internet connection, with traffic exclusions configurable in the profile. When a router-based VPN makes sense

For VPN use at home across devices, a VPN-capable router can handle VPN processing for devices connected to its Wi-Fi, instead of relying on a VPN app on each device. ExpressVPN describes this mechanism for its Aircove router, but no independent quantified battery saving is established. It is a home-network option, not a fix for a phone away from home. (ExpressVPN’s explanation.)
