If your Roku is stuck on “Installing final updates,” first check that it is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and that the internet works. Then retry, restart the Roku and router, and run a manual update check. Test Ethernet or another internet connection if available. Contact Roku Support if the update still fails; factory reset should be a last resort because it erases device settings and account linkage.
1. Wait briefly, then retry the update
The update service may be temporarily unavailable. Wait a few minutes and try again. Roku recommends checking its support information for a service alert if an update error appears. Roku’s update troubleshooting guidance describes this retry approach; that Canada page was last updated February 25, 2026.
2. Check the Roku’s network and internet access
Roku needs a stable internet connection to download software updates. Confirm the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Then connect a phone or computer to that same router and open a website. If it cannot load, troubleshoot the internet connection before retrying the Roku update.

- A streaming player placed behind a TV may receive a weaker signal; reposition it if practical.
- Use Roku’s connection-check instructions to review the device’s network status.
3. Restart the Roku and router
A restart can clear a temporary connection or update problem. Roku’s update guidance says to unplug the Roku player or TV, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect it. Restart the router as well; Roku advises waiting 20–30 seconds before plugging it back in.

If the Roku interface is responsive, use Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. Menu labels can vary by model or software. Roku’s update troubleshooting page covers restarting the devices.
4. Check for the update manually and test another connection
Run a manual update check
- From the Roku Home screen, open Settings.
- Select System, then System update.
- Select Check now and allow the device to complete its check.
Roku’s software update instructions describe this manual check. Roku devices also check for software during initial setup and when powered on, then at random intervals of 24–36 hours, according to Roku’s documentation.

Try Ethernet or a different internet source
If your specific Roku model has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and retry. Ethernet is not available on every model. Roku’s internet connection guidance explains connection options.
If the update still fails, test another internet source, such as a mobile hotspot. If the update works there, the home network is a likely part of the problem, but that result does not identify which network component is responsible. It also does not rule out a separate Roku or update-service issue.

What Roku update error codes mean
Roku’s Canada update troubleshooting page publishes these descriptions. They are troubleshooting guidance, not definitive diagnoses of every underlying cause.
- 001: The device cannot reach the update server. Check internet access and restart the Roku and router.
- 002: The internet connection is too weak. Improve the Wi-Fi signal or move the Roku closer to the router.
- 003: The update cannot be downloaded. Restart the devices or use Ethernet if the model supports it.
- 004: The software update failed. Restart the devices and retry.
- 005: The connection timed out. Restart the network or try again later.
5. Contact Roku Support before considering a factory reset
If the update continues to fail after these steps, contact Roku Support before resetting the device. Roku lists factory reset as an extreme measure in its connection guidance.

A factory reset removes preferences and apps, unlinks the device from the Roku account, and requires guided setup again. Have your Roku account credentials and Wi-Fi details ready before proceeding. Roku’s UK factory-reset instructions explain the effects and setup requirements.
