There is no evidence-based universal top five: editing speed depends on the software, footage, effects, configuration, and laptop power limits. Two well-supported high-end choices are the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max for Apple workflows and the ASUS ProArt P16 for Windows workflows. The comparison below explains what each is equipped to do and how to choose without treating unlike benchmarks as a single ranking.

How to compare powerful video-editing laptops

A high-end processor or graphics chip is only part of the equation. Match the laptop to your editor and media first, then check the configuration you would actually buy.

  • Software and footage: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and other editors do not necessarily benefit from hardware in the same way. Codec, resolution, effects, and timeline complexity also affect performance.
  • GPU and memory: GPU acceleration and VRAM can matter for effects and AI features. Check the exact graphics configuration and memory capacity rather than relying on a model-family name.
  • Media engines: Dedicated support for codecs such as H.264, HEVC, and ProRes can be relevant when editing or exporting those formats.
  • Display and storage: Consider gamut, accuracy, brightness, and capacity against your media and color-work needs. Specifications may differ between configurations.
  • Power and portability: Laptop performance varies with configuration and power limits. Smaller systems can trade away performance, battery life, or comfortable viewing space.

Benchmark scores are meaningful only alongside the tested hardware, software version, and test. Notebookcheck’s published scores, for example, use particular PugetBench versions and Premiere Pro 26 or Resolve 20.3 Studio; they do not establish a universal order for five current laptops. Notebookcheck’s benchmark reporting is best read as workload-specific evidence.

Two high-end candidates with current specifications

16-inch Apple MacBook Pro with M5 Max: for Mac and media-engine workflows

Apple lists the 2026 16-inch MacBook Pro with either M5 Pro or M5 Max. M5 Max configurations include a 32-core or 40-core GPU, and the model can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory. Apple also specifies media engines for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW. These are configuration options and ceilings, not a description of every base model. Check Apple’s MacBook Pro technical specifications for the configuration you are considering.

  • 【CONNECTIVITY & CONTROL】 Equipped with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, USB Type-C, and HDMI for ultimate peripheral support. As a complete video editing laptop solution includes mouse and tablet stand to protect your device and streamline your mobile workstation setup.

Apple says M5 Max can render DaVinci Resolve Studio video effects up to 5.4 times faster than a MacBook Pro with M1 Max and up to 3 times faster than one with M4 Max. Those are Apple’s comparisons, not an independent head-to-head result against the Windows option here. Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max announcement also describes CPU performance improvements as manufacturer claims, not as a cross-brand editing ranking.

Digital Camera World selected the 14-inch M5 Max MacBook Pro as its overall video-editing pick and reported its own Premiere Pro testing, while noting the high price and lack of a touchscreen. That is useful editorial context, but it is not a controlled comparison of five laptops or the 16-inch configuration discussed above. Read its video-editing laptop guide.

What the available benchmark evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Notebookcheck reports PugetBench results for a tested 2026 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro alongside selected comparison laptops. Its results use Premiere Pro 26, Resolve 20.3 Studio, and particular PugetBench versions. Different results across tests are a reason to compare the application and workload you use, not to infer a single winner across all editing.

Lenovo reported that the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 averaged 130.26% higher Premiere Pro workflow performance than the ThinkPad P1 Gen 3 across 17 workflows. This is a Lenovo-published comparison between generations of its workstation laptop, against an older system; it does not rank the Gen 7 against the MacBook Pro or ProArt P16. Lenovo’s ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 benchmarking report gives the context for that figure.

How to choose for your editing workload

  1. Start with your editor and media. Identify the application, codec, resolution, and common effects you use. Check how the software handles those workloads on the operating system you plan to use.
  2. Choose a platform and hardware balance. The MacBook Pro’s specified media engines and configurable unified memory suit buyers prioritizing Apple’s media formats and Mac workflow. The ProArt P16 offers Windows configurations with a high-end RTX Laptop GPU and substantial listed memory and storage ceilings.
  3. Check the exact configuration. Compare GPU, memory, storage, and display for the specific regional model—not just the family name. The top listed specification may not be available in every configuration or market.
  4. Use relevant tests, not a headline score. Prefer results from your editor and a workload close to yours, and verify tested hardware and software versions. Manufacturer claims and vendor-sponsored testing can inform a decision, but should remain attributed.
  5. Balance power against practical constraints. Compare the configured system’s price, portability, screen comfort, and storage needs. A higher specification is not automatically better value if it does not improve your particular workflow.
