If iPhone calls suddenly end, the symptom alone won’t reveal the cause. Apple says call problems can stem from settings, outdated software, or a network problem. Work through the checks below in order, testing a call after each change; if the issue persists, ask your carrier to check your account and its network.
First, confirm which kind of call is ending
These steps are for ordinary cellular calls made in the Phone app. If a FaceTime audio or video call disconnects, that is a separate issue: slow cellular or Wi-Fi connections can interrupt FaceTime, so check the connection and follow Apple’s FaceTime troubleshooting guidance rather than treating it as proof of a cellular voice-call problem.
Look for a pattern before changing settings
Note whether calls keep dropping in one place, while you are moving, or in several locations. Also check whether the status bar changes to show weak service, No Service, or Searching. Apple recommends trying a call in another location. A location-specific pattern is useful information for your carrier, but it does not by itself prove that coverage is the cause.
Try reversible checks first
Apple Support says, “You may not be able to make or receive calls on your iPhone if you have certain settings turned on, if your software isn’t up to date or if there’s a problem with your network.” Follow these checks one at a time and place a test call after each. Menu names or paths can vary by iOS version.

- Toggle Airplane Mode: Open Control Center, turn Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, then turn it off. Wait for cellular service to return before testing.
- Review calling and Focus settings: Check relevant settings in Settings > Apps > Phone and Settings > Focus. Confirm that a setting affecting calls or silencing notifications is not interfering with the way you expect calls to work. The exact options depend on your iOS version.
- Check for a carrier-settings update: Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About and wait briefly. If an update prompt appears, follow it.
- Install an available iOS update: Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, install it when you can keep the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi, then test calls again.
Try Wi-Fi Calling if cellular reception is weak
Wi-Fi Calling can route calls over Wi-Fi when cellular signal is low, but availability depends on your carrier and country or region. It also requires a working Wi-Fi connection. Check with your carrier that the feature is supported for your iPhone and account; if it is, turn it on in Settings > Apps > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling (the path can vary by iOS version) and try a call on a stable Wi-Fi network. Apple notes that, when available and enabled, calls can switch between Wi-Fi and the carrier’s cellular network using VoLTE. Enabling Wi-Fi Calling is not a guaranteed fix for every dropped call.
Ask your carrier to check account and network records
If calls still disconnect, contact your carrier and ask it to verify that your account is set up for this iPhone, there is no local outage or billing-related block, and its system shows no call errors or service restrictions. Tell the carrier where and when calls drop, whether the problem happens in other locations, and what the service indicator shows. These checks can reveal account or network-side problems that an iPhone setting cannot resolve.

Reset Network Settings only after the simpler checks
Reset Network Settings is a later troubleshooting step, not a first response. It removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and preferred networks, along with VPN and APN settings, so you may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore network configuration afterward. Apple’s guidance identifies these network items as what the reset affects; it does not say that the reset erases personal photos or messages.

If you decide to proceed, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings, then confirm. The wording may differ slightly by iOS version. Rejoin Wi-Fi and test a call once the iPhone reconnects.

If the iPhone shows No Service or Searching
No Service or Searching means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. Try toggling Airplane Mode, check for a carrier-settings update using Settings > General > About, and contact your carrier if service does not return. Ask about account status, coverage at your location, outages, and service restrictions.
