To see more about your Mac’s current Wi-Fi connection, hold Option while clicking the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar. The expanded menu shows connection details such as your IP address, router address, channel, frequency or band, security standard, and 802.11 protocol. It is a status view—not a repair tool. For a separate analysis, choose Open Wireless Diagnostics from the same menu.
How to view your Mac’s Wi-Fi connection details

Connect to the Wi-Fi network you want to inspect, if possible.

Hold down Option and click the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar.

Read the additional information displayed below the connected network. Apple lists details including the IP address, router address, channel, frequency or band, security standard, and 802.11 protocol. Apple’s Wi-Fi status menu guide describes the fields available.

What the details can—and can’t—tell you
The menu gives you clues about the current connection, not an overall Wi-Fi health score. For example, it can show the channel, band or frequency, and protocol in use alongside addressing and security information. Apple’s guide does not provide thresholds for judging those values, so a number or label alone does not establish that a connection is good or bad. Their meaning depends on the network and the problem you are investigating.
Use Wireless Diagnostics for a separate analysis
From the Option-click menu, choose Open Wireless Diagnostics and follow the on-screen instructions. When the analysis is complete, review the Summary pane and select its Info buttons for additional details. Wireless Diagnostics reports detected issues and possible solutions; it does not change network settings. Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics guide explains the workflow.

Find the diagnostic file if support requests it
Wireless Diagnostics creates a compressed support file in /var/tmp, with a name beginning WirelessDiagnostics and ending in .tar.gz. Apple says the file may be useful to a network administrator, service provider, or IT support person. Share it when support asks for it rather than treating the archive as a repair or configuration file.

If Wi-Fi or internet access still isn’t working
Wireless Diagnostics is one step in troubleshooting, not a guarantee that every connection problem will be resolved. Apple’s broader guidance recommends checking Wi-Fi Recommendations when available, confirming that the router’s firmware is current according to its manufacturer, and considering whether VPN or security software is affecting the connection. If your Mac can connect to another network but not the one in question, ask the internet service provider or network administrator whether there is an outage. Wi-Fi Recommendations are not available for personal hotspots or for certain enterprise security protocols, including WPA Enterprise and WPA2 Enterprise. In those cases, use the other troubleshooting steps or contact the person responsible for the network.

Here, “hidden” means that the extra menu details are revealed by the Option-click interaction. A hidden Wi-Fi network is different: its network name is not broadcast. Joining one requires its name and relevant security information. Apple’s guide to joining a hidden Wi-Fi network explains that separate feature.
