Canned air can have a shelf life, but there is no expiration period that applies to every aerosol duster. Chemtronics and Falcon each state a 10-year shelf life for their own products, with conditions attached. Check the documentation for your specific can, and treat its printed date carefully: on Falcon cans, it marks the fill date, not an expiration date.
What canned air is—and what “expiration” means
“Canned air” is a common name for an aerosol duster used to remove dust and debris. Despite the name, it is not a can of ordinary air: these products are pressurized metal containers holding liquefied gas propellant. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes the product category this way.
For shelf life, the key distinction is between general advice and a manufacturer’s stated limit. There is no universal expiration date for every brand or formula. Use the shelf-life guidance for the exact product, along with the can’s storage history and physical condition.

Some manufacturers give a 10-year shelf life, but those statements apply to their own products and conditions—not to every can of canned air.

- Chemtronics Duster: Chemtronics lists a 10-year shelf life. Its FAQ says the can and valve must remain intact and undamaged; it says an undamaged can will not leak or spoil and can sit on a shelf for as long as 10 years. See the product information and Chemtronics FAQ.
- Falcon dusters: Falcon says its products have a 10-year shelf life when properly stored. That is Falcon’s guidance for its products, not a general rule for aerosol dusters. See Falcon’s FAQ.
Do not assume that a can needs replacement solely because it is old, or that it is good indefinitely because another manufacturer gives a 10-year figure. Check the product’s own documentation.
How to interpret the date on the can
A printed date does not always mean “use by.” Falcon says the date printed on the bottom of its can indicates when the can was filled with gas, not an expiration date. Other brands may use different date or batch-code conventions, so do not apply Falcon’s explanation to another product.

Chemtronics directs customers to its product technical data sheet or certificate of conformance for shelf-life information. It also says a batch number can identify the manufacture date. For most Chemtronics products, its batch-code format is YYDDD: YY is the year and DDD is the day of the year. This is a Chemtronics convention, not a universal code format. Consult its FAQ or the documentation for your specific product.

- Identify the product. Find the brand and product name on the label so you can use the correct manufacturer guidance.
- Look up its shelf-life and date-code information. Check the product label, technical data sheet, certificate of conformance, or manufacturer guidance. If a code is unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than guessing.
- Inspect the can and valve. Falcon recommends periodically checking stored cans for rust, misuse, compromise, or damage. Chemtronics conditions its shelf-life statement on the can and valve remaining intact and undamaged.
- Do not use a compromised can. If it is rusty, damaged, leaking, or has a compromised valve, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local disposal guidance instead of using it.
There is no single visual test or date-code format established for every aerosol duster. A can’s appearance cannot replace product-specific instructions.

Use aerosol dusters only as directed
Aerosol dusters contain propellant, and inhaling their contents can be deadly. Use the product only as directed for dusting; never deliberately inhale it. The CPSC’s consumer guidance warns about the inhalation hazard.
In an August 2, 2023 statement, CPSC Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr. cited 1,115 reported deaths and 28,800 emergency-room visits involving inhalation of 1,1-difluoroethane between 2006 and 2022. Those figures cover the stated substance and period; they are not an annual rate or a count for every aerosol-duster formula. See the commissioner’s statement.

If you need an alternative to a can
Electric dusters are among the alternatives recognized in the CPSC’s market report. That report does not evaluate particular models or establish that every electric duster suits every electronics-cleaning task, so check the device’s instructions and whether it is appropriate for the job.
