If Alexa or Google Assistant cannot control a Roku Smart Home device, first check whether the device works in the Roku Smart Home app. If it does, focus on account linking, device discovery, or whether the command is supported. If it does not, troubleshoot the device’s power, network, and app setup first.
First, identify which Roku product you are troubleshooting
Roku Smart Home cameras, doorbells, lights, plugs, and monitoring devices use the Roku Smart Home integration. Roku streaming players and TVs use separate assistant integrations for media tasks such as launching apps or controlling TV functions. Follow the right setup path: linking a streaming player does not link a Smart Home camera or plug.
Link Roku Smart Home to the assistant
Alexa: enable the Roku Smart Home skill
- In the Alexa app, open Skills & Games and search for Roku Smart Home.
- Enable the skill and sign in with the Roku account used for the Smart Home device.
- Return to Alexa and allow it to discover devices. Confirm the Roku Smart Home device is powered on.
- If you cannot select the device, open Manage devices from the Roku Smart Home skill screen.
Roku’s setup instructions are in its Alexa integration guide.
Google Assistant: link Roku through Google Home
- In the Google Home app, open the Works with Google setup flow.
- Search for and select Roku, then sign in with the Roku account associated with the Smart Home device.
- After linking, ask Google to discover devices. If the accounts are already linked but the device is missing, say: “Hey Google, Sync my devices.”
See Roku’s Google Assistant setup instructions. The cited guide appears in Roku’s Mexico support locale; check availability and capabilities for your location, since they can vary.

Find where the connection is failing
Test the device in the Roku Smart Home app before changing assistant settings. That separates a device or network setup problem from an assistant linking or discovery problem.
If the device also fails in the Roku Smart Home app
- Check that the device has power and that its status is normal. For wired devices, check the Ethernet connection.
- Make sure your phone has Wi-Fi and, if the setup process requires it, Bluetooth enabled. Confirm the phone can access the internet.
- Connect the Smart Home device to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- On iOS 16 or later, allow Local Network access for the Roku Smart Home app.
- Temporarily disable a VPN during setup, and reinstall the app if necessary.
These are Roku Smart Home app connectivity checks; they do not by themselves resolve an assistant account-linking failure. Roku’s app setup troubleshooting guide covers these requirements.

- See it all on your TV: No, no—don’t get up. Pull up your camera’s feed on your Roku TV or player by simply pressing a button on your remote or using Roku Voice.
If the device works in Roku’s app but the assistant cannot find it
- Check that you linked the same Roku account used by the device in the Roku Smart Home app.
- In Alexa, use the skill’s Manage devices option if the device is not selectable. In Google Home, use the spoken sync command.
- Check the assistant’s device list after discovery or sync.
If these steps do not help, the problem may involve an account or service issue not covered by the setup guidance. Successful operation in Roku’s app confirms the device’s local app connection, but it does not establish that the assistant’s account or cloud service is working normally.
Reconnect after changing Wi-Fi or routers
When you change Wi-Fi credentials or equipment, Roku says to set up the Smart Home device again on the new network. Most devices require a factory reset first; a reset removes settings and preferences.
Rank #3
- Identify the exact Smart Home device model.
- Find and follow that model’s Roku reset procedure before resetting it.
- Set up the device again on the new network, then repeat assistant discovery if needed.
Reset instructions differ by model. Roku’s Wi-Fi change guidance explains the re-setup requirement.
Check whether the command is supported
Roku Smart Home voice controls vary by device and assistant. Supported examples include turning lights on, adjusting brightness or color, viewing a camera or doorbell feed on a compatible Alexa or Google display, and checking or changing home-monitoring mode. A command intended for a streaming player—such as launching an app or changing TV volume—is not a Smart Home command.

- Wide compatibility — Certified for Matter, SmartThings, Z-Wave Plus (V3 model only), Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Google Home, and Alexa. Designed for use in North America.
- Camera or doorbell: Live viewing requires a compatible Alexa or Google display and a supported command.
- Lights and plugs: Use functions supported for that device, such as turning it on or adjusting a light’s brightness or color.
- Monitoring: Disarming can require extra security steps. Roku’s Alexa instructions require voice disarm to be enabled and the voice-code behavior configured; Google may require a PIN to be spoken or entered.
Consult Roku’s Alexa Smart Home guide or Google Assistant guide for the supported controls and their conditions. For Roku streaming player and TV voice features, use the separate streaming-device assistant guidance; app-specific commands and media-service support can have limitations.

Roku distinguishes its Smart Home products from devices made by other vendors and does not recommend third-party accessories it has not officially tested. Avoid relying on an unverified third-party app or accessory as a guaranteed fix for linking or discovery problems.
