Sometimes—but “free to deploy” is not the same as “free, production-ready, or permitted for every client project.” Next.js can run on any host that meets its Node.js requirements, and Supabase offers a Free plan with published quotas. But Supabase Free projects can pause after inactivity and do not include downloadable database backups; the host’s commercial-use terms also matter. Use the stack for an appropriate small site only after checking those limits and preparing for launch.
What this stack can—and cannot—promise
Next.js is the application framework; Supabase can provide hosted database and backend services. Supabase publishes a Next.js starter, while Next.js is not tied to one hosting provider. That makes the combination a practical way to start a small project, but it does not establish that a client site will cost nothing, remain continuously available, meet recovery needs, or be suitable for every workload.
There is no measured shipping-time or performance comparison here, and a “fast” setup is not a guarantee of a fast site. The useful question is whether the starter, quotas, deployment workflow, and operational limits fit this particular client and project.
How to connect Supabase to a Next.js app
-
From a terminal, create the app with Supabase’s current starter:
npx create-next-app@latest my-app -e with-supabase. The template is preconfigured for cookie-based authentication, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. Follow the Supabase Next.js quickstart for the current setup details.#1 Best Overall

Create a Supabase project, then configure the Supabase URL and publishable key as environment variables for the app. Keep secrets out of source control; set the required values in the local development environment and in the deployment platform’s environment-variable settings.
-
Develop and test locally, including the database queries and authentication flows the site needs. The quickstart is intended to get a working app, not certify it for production.
-
Manage schema changes as migrations. Choose either Supabase’s GitHub integration or a CLI-based deployment workflow, and make sure the changes applied to the deployed database match the version of the app being released.

Deploy the Next.js app to a host that meets Next.js requirements. Configure production environment variables, verify permissions and authentication, and test the live site before handing it to the client.
What Supabase Free includes
Supabase’s billing documentation, checked October 7, 2026, lists these Free-plan limits. They are published quotas—not predictions of a site’s traffic or guarantees that a particular project will stay within them. The two-active-project allowance applies across organizations where the account is an Owner or Administrator. Check the current Supabase billing documentation before choosing a plan because quotas and terms can change.
| Free-plan allowance | Published limit |
|---|---|
| Active projects | 2 |
| Database size | 500 MB per project |
| Egress | 5 GB |
| Monthly active users | 50,000 |
| Storage | 1 GB |
| Edge Function invocations | 500,000 |
Compare the project’s expected database growth, file storage, active users, function use, and data transfer with these limits. A site can fit one quota and exceed another, so “small website” alone is not enough to establish fit.

Is Supabase Free suitable for a production client site?
It may suit a low-risk site whose owner accepts the plan’s operational constraints, but a free quota is not an availability or recovery plan. Supabase says low-activity Free projects may be paused after a week, and downloadable database backups are not available for Free projects. Review the Supabase production checklist against the client’s expectations for uptime, data recovery, and ownership before launch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Pauses: decide whether a project pause after a period of low activity is acceptable for this site.
- Recovery: establish how the client would recover data if the database needed restoration; Free does not provide downloadable database backups.
- Authentication email: consider configuring the project’s own SMTP credentials for greater control over transactional auth email delivery.
- Security: review row-level security (RLS) policies so users can access only the data they are authorized to see.
- Domain and configuration: consider a custom domain, and verify that production environment variables are set correctly.
For a site where pauses, missing downloadable backups, or the available limits are unacceptable, evaluate a paid plan or another operational arrangement rather than treating Free as a production guarantee.

Supabase documents GitHub integration and CLI-based deployments as available on all plans. Its recommended GitHub workflow can deploy schema changes from main. Isolated preview branches for pull requests—useful for testing changes in a separate environment before production—require the Pro plan. See the Supabase deployment documentation for the supported workflows.

| Workflow need | Plan availability |
|---|---|
GitHub integration to deploy schema changes from main |
Available on all plans |
| CLI-based deployment or user-managed CI/CD | Available on all plans |
| Isolated Supabase preview branches for pull requests | Requires Pro |
If a team needs a separate database environment for each pull request, factor that plan requirement into the project budget. A Git-based workflow itself does not require Pro.
Choosing a host for the Next.js app
The Next.js deployment guide says the minimum platform requirement is a Node.js server. It also discusses adapters and platform-specific support for capabilities such as streaming and multi-instance caching. Next.js therefore does not force a Vercel deployment; select a host based on the features and operating model the app needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Technical compatibility and permission to use a plan for client work are separate questions. A Vercel community-forum response from March 2023 described Hobby’s commercial-use boundary in terms of deployments used for financial gain by anyone involved in production. That response is dated and is not a substitute for current terms. Before using any host’s free plan for a client site, inspect its current commercial-use rules, deployment limits, and feature support.
Quick Recap
A practical decision check before launch
- Site risk: distinguish an experiment or low-risk brochure site from a revenue-critical service.
- Usage: estimate database, user, storage, function, and egress needs against the current Supabase quotas.
- Availability: decide whether the possibility of a Free-project pause is acceptable.
- Recovery: determine what backup and restoration capability the client requires.
- Team workflow: decide whether deployment from GitHub or a CLI pipeline is sufficient, or whether pull-request preview branches are needed.
- Hosting: verify that the chosen platform supports the app’s Next.js features and that its current plan permits the intended client use.
- Launch security: verify RLS policies, authentication, environment-variable configuration, and any custom-domain requirements.
