Drift is a free, open-source desktop video editor from CutWire Studios, built with Qt 6, QML, and FFmpeg. Its advertised feature set includes a multitrack timeline, captions, effects, audio tools, compositing, multicamera editing, project bundles, and video export. The project says the editor has no subscription, watermark, or account requirement; these are the publisher’s claims, not independently tested findings.
What Drift is designed to do
CutWire Studios presents Drift as a general-purpose desktop editor for projects such as social clips, game footage, school assignments, tutorials, product demos, and memes. Its workflow is intended to cover more than basic trimming, while remaining a local desktop editing application. See the official Drift repository for the project’s current description.
The listed capabilities describe what the publisher says the software offers. They do not establish how easy any feature is to use or how well it performs on a particular computer.

Motion and sound
Motion options include changing clip speed and reversing footage. Audio features listed by the project include fades, music-synced edits, mixing, equalization, compression, noise cleanup, and voice effects.

Multicamera and project bundles
The project also advertises multicamera editing and project bundles that package media with a project. Bundling can be useful when moving or handing off project files, but the repository description does not establish compatibility with other editing applications.
Export and local AI-tool access
The README lists MP4 export with quality presets, GIF loops, and ranged export. It also describes an MCP server for local AI tools. Agent access is disabled until enabled and listens on the local computer, according to the project documentation; this feature has not been independently security-audited here. Check the project README for the current feature details.

Platforms and where to check downloads
The project README lists distribution routes for Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android. Because package availability and release details can change, use the live official Drift releases page and repository rather than relying on an old installer list or version number.
The releases listing has included an Android release, but the available evidence does not establish which release is latest today. Confirm the current version and the download route for your device on the official pages before installing.

Is Drift free, and what about addons?
The project identifies Drift as GPLv3-licensed and describes it as free, with no subscription, watermark, or account requirement. Its README says users can download optional fonts, stickers, effects, and speech models through an in-app addon manager. The available project information does not establish whether any addons cost money, so check the terms shown in the app rather than assuming they are all free.
Build requirements are not minimum PC requirements
For developers compiling Drift, the official build documentation lists CMake 3.21 or newer, a C++20 compiler, Qt 6.10 or newer, and FFmpeg 8.x, plus supporting libraries. It says ONNX Runtime powers auto-subtitles and related machine-learning features and is supplied as an addon.

These are software build dependencies, not minimum hardware requirements for running a packaged editor. The cited documentation does not establish a minimum processor, memory, graphics card, or expected performance for your computer. In particular, the mention of GPU effects does not establish a specific GPU requirement or export speed.
Who should consider Drift?
Drift may be worth investigating if you want a desktop editor with a multitrack workflow and the project’s advertised tools for captions, compositing, sound, and export, and you prefer software the publisher describes as free and open source. Before committing to a project, verify that the current build supports your platform and test the workflow on your own media. The official feature list is not independent evidence of usability, performance, or how Drift compares with other editors.
