PIA and NordVPN are both paid VPN services, but they suit different priorities. PIA allows unlimited simultaneous devices on its subscriptions; NordVPN lists ten and offers more tiered features. Independent reviews report stronger streaming results for NordVPN, while describing PIA as customizable and more affordable. The right choice depends on how many devices you use, which features matter, and the full price at checkout and renewal—not a universal winner.

Choose based on device count
PIA’s unlimited simultaneous-device allowance is a practical distinction for households or people who use many phones, computers, and other supported devices. NordVPN lists ten connections at once. If your household can stay within that limit, the difference may not matter; if not, PIA’s stated allowance is more flexible. Confirm the current terms on each provider’s site.

Choose based on streaming priorities
In its review, TechRadar said PIA accessed Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video. Tom’s Guide said NordVPN worked on every streaming site it tried. Those are publication-specific test results, not a guarantee of access today: platforms can change restrictions, catalogs vary by location, and an available title depends on the streaming service as well as the VPN.

NordVPN has the stronger reported streaming outcome in the reviews cited here. If streaming is decisive, test the VPN on your own device and network and check the services and locations you actually use. Do not assume a review’s result applies to every catalog or future session. TechRadar’s PIA review and Tom’s Guide’s NordVPN review describe their respective findings.
Choose based on customization and feature breadth
TechRadar characterizes PIA as customizable and describes core VPN tools alongside optional antivirus and dedicated-IP features. NordVPN markets a broader tiered bundle of security and privacy features. Extra features are not automatically better privacy: compare the specific tools included in the plan you would buy, and whether you would use them, rather than treating bundle size as a measure of core VPN protection.

Compare the full subscription cost, not just the advertised monthly figure
PIA’s website support article lists one-month, one-year, two-year, and three-year options, but says offers can vary and subscriptions renew automatically under the term and price shown at checkout. In-app subscriptions are billed through Apple or Google. NordVPN says introductory pricing applies only to the initial term; subscriptions auto-renew at the then-applicable rate unless canceled, and the renewal price can be higher and may change.
Before paying, compare the total charged now and the renewal amount, not only the monthly equivalent displayed for a long-term plan. Check your country, currency, taxes, plan tier, subscription length, renewal term, and refund conditions at checkout. NordVPN describes a 30-day period for requesting a refund on an initial purchase; review its current conditions before relying on it. PIA directs buyers to its order page for current offers. PIA’s subscription-options page and NordVPN’s pricing page explain their respective terms. Prices vary by market, so a search-result price is not a reliable universal rate.

Privacy claims: what the audit evidence does and does not show
PIA’s audit record is summarized by TechRadar as three Deloitte no-logs audits, the latest in early 2026. TechRadar also says the full report is available only to PIA customers. That is a report about PIA’s stated logging practices within the scope of those reviews; it is not a public, unrestricted guarantee of anonymity.
NordVPN’s privacy page describes PwC AG Switzerland reviews of its no-logs claims in 2018 and 2020 and later Deloitte reviews. The page’s stated history and dates differ across sections, so a precise audit count should not be inferred from it. A separate Top10VPN assessment interprets NordVPN’s handling of connection timestamps differently from the provider’s no-logs framing. Treat that as the publication’s finding, not a settled universal conclusion; the data category, retention period, source, and date matter. An audit of a VPN provider’s practices does not prevent tracking by accounts, apps, websites, or payment services you use. A VPN changes how traffic is routed and what network observers may see; it does not make all online activity anonymous.

PIA: WireGuard in apps, OpenVPN for manual router setup
PIA Support says WireGuard is available in its apps for Windows 10/11, macOS 10.15 and later, listed Linux distributions, Android 7.0 and later, iOS 15 and later, Android TV, and Fire TV. The same guidance says manual WireGuard router configuration is unsupported and router use requires manual OpenVPN configuration. NordVPN: NordLynx, OpenVPN, and NordWhisper
NordVPN Support describes NordLynx, which is based on WireGuard, as the default protocol in most apps; it also describes OpenVPN and NordWhisper, which is designed for restrictive networks. The company describes OpenVPN as mature open-source software and lists AES-256-GCM and a 4096-bit DH key in its protocol guidance. These are provider descriptions, not a like-for-like independent security or speed comparison. NordVPN Support’s protocol explanation has the details.
Protocol names alone do not establish which VPN will be faster for you. Results depend on your connection, location, device, selected server, and destination. NordVPN recommends NordLynx for speed-dependent activity, but that is the provider’s recommendation, not proof it will outperform PIA on every network. If speed matters, try each service under your own conditions instead of comparing results from different review labs as if they shared a test setup.
