If you rooted your Android phone with Magisk, start with Magisk’s own app and its uninstall function. That is the documented route for removing Magisk—not a universal unroot app for every phone or root method. If you do not know how the phone was rooted, or you want to restore all manufacturer software, identify your exact device and follow its official firmware instructions before changing partitions or bootloader settings.
Choose the path that matches your goal
“Unrooting” can mean removing a root manager, undoing changes to the boot or system partitions, or returning the phone to manufacturer software. Those are different jobs. Start by identifying the root method and deciding how complete a restoration you need.
| Your situation | Starting point | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| You used Magisk and want to remove Magisk | Use Magisk’s in-app uninstall function. | This is the Magisk project’s documented starting point; it does not establish a method for other root tools. |
| You do not know the root method, or the phone has custom firmware | Identify the exact model, software build, and root method; consult the manufacturer’s instructions. | A generic app or factory reset is not established as a complete restoration method. |
| You want the complete manufacturer software back | Find official firmware and instructions for the exact device and variant. | Some devices require computer-assisted firmware flashing; procedures are not interchangeable across manufacturers. |
Remove Magisk through the Magisk app
The Magisk project describes uninstalling directly through its app as “the easiest way to uninstall Magisk.” Open the Magisk app and use its uninstall function, following the prompts shown for your device. The official instructions are at Magisk’s installation and uninstallation documentation.
Do not assume that deleting the app icon or app data removes root. Magisk installation can involve boot, init_boot, or recovery images depending on the device’s partition layout. The app’s uninstall route is relevant to Magisk-managed devices; it is not proof that the phone has returned to every original manufacturer partition or configuration.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Restore manufacturer software when needed
If your goal is a full return to stock, use firmware and instructions intended for your exact manufacturer, model, regional or carrier variant, and software build. AOSP documents fastboot flashing and Google factory images, but those instructions should not be generalized to every Android manufacturer. Google’s Android Help also advises consulting the device manufacturer for model-specific steps.
- Identify the device precisely. Record the manufacturer, full model or variant, current Android build, and whether it runs a custom ROM. Determine which root method was used if possible.
- Locate official firmware and instructions. Use the manufacturer’s support documentation for that exact device and variant. For Google devices, consult the AOSP fastboot flashing documentation and the applicable factory image guidance.
- Back up data before any reset or flashing operation. Bootloader unlocking erases user data, and factory reset erases phone data and removes apps and their data. Confirm account and screen-lock credentials and follow the device maker’s warnings.
- Follow only the device-specific procedure. AOSP describes fastboot as a computer-based flashing method that can flash an Android system and reboot. Its example command
fastboot flashall -wwipes the data partition; do not copy it unless the instructions for your device specifically call for it and you understand the data loss.
A computer-assisted fastboot procedure requires a workstation and an appropriate USB connection. The cable must support data transfer and fit the phone’s connector; the cable itself does not remove root. A Magisk in-app uninstall does not require this computer-assisted path.

Why factory reset is not the same as unrooting
A factory reset is a personal-data reset, not a verified method for restoring modified boot or system partitions. Google’s factory reset guidance says the process erases phone data and recommends backing up first; it directs users to manufacturer-specific instructions. Some steps on that page apply only to Android 14 and later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a reset only when it is part of the correct device-specific recovery or restoration procedure. Do not rely on a reset alone to undo root or restore factory firmware.

Understand bootloader state before relocking
Whether a root app is installed and whether the bootloader is locked are separate questions. AOSP explains that an unlocked device can proceed to boot even when the loaded operating system is not signed by the root of trust. A locked device, by contrast, boots only when the software passes the required verification. See AOSP’s device-state documentation.
Do not relock the bootloader as a generic final step. Relocking with modified, incompatible, or otherwise unsupported software can prevent the phone from booting. Consider it only after restoring manufacturer-signed software using a procedure supported for the exact device; the AOSP documentation is not a universal safety guarantee for every phone.

Before you start: a safety checklist
- Confirm whether the phone was rooted with Magisk or another method; do not apply Magisk instructions to an unknown root setup.
- Decide whether you only need to remove Magisk or need a complete manufacturer-software restoration.
- Match firmware and instructions to the exact model, regional or carrier variant, and build.
- Back up important data before reset, unlocking, or flashing work; confirm you can access the accounts and credentials needed afterward.
- Do not run generic fastboot commands or relock the bootloader without device-specific official guidance.
- If the phone will not boot or the supported restoration procedure fails, seek the manufacturer’s support or an authorized repair service rather than trying unrelated firmware.
