The SteelSeries Arctis 3 is a plug-and-play 3.5 mm analog headset. Whether its microphone works through a direct connection or needs an adapter depends on your PC’s audio jacks: use the headset plug in a single combined headset jack, or a microphone-capable dual 3.5 mm splitter when headphone and mic ports are separate.
Choose the connection that matches your PC

SteelSeries describes the Arctis 3 as a legacy 3.5 mm analog headset that you “simply plug and play.” Its PC setup guidance distinguishes systems with one jack from those with more than one.
Connect the Arctis 3 microphone step by step
- Check the PC’s ports. Look for one combined headset port or separate headphone and microphone ports. Port colors and icons vary, so use the labels or symbols when available.
- Connect the headset. For a combined jack, insert the headset’s 4-pole 3.5 mm plug directly. For separate jacks, connect through a dual 3.5 mm headset splitter, matching its headphone and microphone plugs to the PC ports.
- Seat the plug fully. A loose connection can prevent audio or mic detection.
- Unmute the headset. Check the inline mute control if the microphone seems silent.
- Select the recording input in your PC or app. Choose the connected headset microphone as the input device. The exact menu and label depend on the operating system, its version, and the app, so there is no single universal settings path.
What SteelSeries GG can—and cannot—configure
The Arctis 3 is analog, not a USB device that Engine can configure. SteelSeries says Engine does not support 3.5 mm devices and specifically includes Arctis 3 models among its examples. You should not expect the headset to appear as an Engine device for tuning or firmware updates. See SteelSeries’ explanation of Engine support for analog devices.

SteelSeries separately describes Sonar as offering microphone effects. Those are software-processing features; their availability does not mean the Arctis 3 itself is recognized or configurable in Engine. For physical features, SteelSeries’ Arctis 3 product page describes a ClearCast microphone and detachable 3.5 mm cable. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements of recording quality.

If the microphone is not detected
- Recheck the connection type. A PC with separate headphone and mic ports needs a dual headset splitter with microphone support; a headphone-output splitter alone is not enough.
- Confirm the plugs are fully inserted at the headset, adapter, and PC.
- Check the inline mute control and the recording input selected in the operating system and the app you are using.
- Test another suitable input or connection if available to narrow down whether the issue is the port, splitter, cable, or headset. The Arctis 3 has a detachable 3.5 mm cable, but SteelSeries’ cited material does not establish a replacement-cable SKU or compatibility list.
